diesel into a '60 kombi?????!!!

has anyone ever put a 1500 diesel from a golf into a 1960 split winscreen kombi? im starting a long resto project soon on my dads (and his dads) kombi thats been next to our creek down the paddock for about 10 years.

at the end of it, i want to put the diesel engine in it - economy, torque, slightly more power too - so if anyones done this already it would be great to get some advice.

note, ofcourse, that starting this project now, and judging how much free time i usually have, it might not be ready for an engine for 2 or 3 years....at least.

main questions i have are:

1) what would i do about cooling, the golf diesel being a watercooled engine ofcourse...

2) would i be better to mount the engine longitudinally and work out the gearbox and stuff later, or

3) mount the engine transversly, use the golf gearbox and driveshafts running straight into the reduction boxes.

tell me your thoughts!

Aydan

i am looking at putting same motor in my beetle, you can buy the adaptor plates to bolt it to the kombi gearbox,

not that simple really

a golf is real light ,much lighter than a splitty ,i am not sure a golf deisel would be very good in a heavy splitty ,you would definately have to turbo it , i have never seen it ,not to say it has never been done though ,have you done a lot of searches on the net ,try samba or vintagebus

you still need to make up engine mounts etc, so the motor isn't hanging off the back of the gearbox, thegolf makesabout the same power and has about the same rev range as the beetle motor, just with more torque, and a turbo would definantly improve that

david,

the splitter has an empty weight of 998kg (quoted from dad...) where the golf empty weight is 845kg.

the 1500 that used to be in the kombi was 40hp@4000rpm model, generating i think 76lbsft@3000rpm.

the golf engine produces 88lbsft@3000 rpm and 52bhp@5000 rpm. its a far more modern engine than the original and being diesel produces plenty of torque right through the rpm range.

also note that with the lower geared kombie, the accelleration would be improved more, compared with the golf which is quite highly geared.

turbo is an option i'm not really keen on - the N/A diesel engine is a bit different from the turbo version, which has a stronger head and extra oil jets....would be nice though! unfortunately, the turbo's didnt really seem to get to australia, because about when they became popular (1982-89) the DM to AUD exchange rate was so bad that golf imports kind of stopped entirely, since they were about the same price as a commodore....(worth the extra i would say...)

anyway, thanks guys. the adapter plates were something i kind of expected to exist - i think there is a huge market for them in brazil, where a lot of beetles have the golf engine......
