Oops!......We goofed!


Just removed the bogged up rear apron to replace it and the exhaust system. lifted the new German muffler to what was thought to be a 1500 cc engine in a '69 Type 1 Beetle...
Humm....it doesn't fit!....I did the Search on engine numbers in the old posts and ....:cussing....so I checked the engine number D 1086665 . it would appear to be off a '73 Bug...( Not Happy Jan!)....
The question is....is this a 1500 or 1600 engine...I'm a little dumb when reading the info and it's not all that clear....( well I did try to sort this out as best I could.)

have got engine numbers handy but it is not a 73 motor

a 73 would be an AD or A# - as in A-something

The muffler "should" fit if it is a 13,15 or 1600. They all had 69 cranks and are the same width.

It is one of 3 things

a) It is crap brazilian and needs to be tought to fit

b) If it is way to wide then "maybe" you actually have a 1200 in there as they had a 64 crank and were not as wide. The 1200 muffler wont fit a 1300-1600 donk

c) You have bought a 1200 muffler

Someone will tell you what that engine # is


hmmm - just checked Idiot Guide and the only reference to a DXXXXXXXX is a REALLY early 1600 - the "the old 34hp 1600"

H XXXXX was 1500
then B XXXXXX was the first 1600 then in Aug 1970 it said D XXXXX "the old 34hp 1600" - this wa followed by the AB XXXXX

Hmmmmm - anyway - sounds now to me you have an A) or C) situation

Thanks for the reply...as you can see below is a pic of the problem, also engine number is definately D 1086665 . German muffler not Brazillian,.... bugger!..she's a wee bit too wide.
I might get back onto Mick's Parts and change it over. I'd like to be able to tell him what engine this is before I do that tho'..might save me having the same problem again.....being stuck up in the bush has some drawbacks....

looks like a 1200 muffler if not measure between the top studs and have this with you when taking it back to micks

According to Tom Wilson's 'How to Rebuild Your Volkswagen Aircooled Engine' the only engine numbers beginning with D are after market replacement cases which are "sometimes" 40HP parts

Just measured the top studs.

C-C 505mm.....does that mean anything?....

The previous owner had told me the engine was in the car when he bought it and couldn't tell me what it was... this is getting interesting....a replacement engine?... wonder why it has that prefix in the engine number lists tho'.

Below are some numbers I gleened off the list from the "Search".......as you can see it doesn't actually say what the size is...the 1200 appears to have a DO prefix

Bugger!....it does sound like a bitser....I'll check with Mick on the blower today, see if he has a muffler that fits, if not, then Option (a) could be the answer, if that's the case then it's time to get the hacksaw and mig earning their keep....

The muffler I removed was attached to some hybrid extractors...I'll check that too to see if it's been "rearranged" to fit.

OK. here's the latest....

It's a 1200cc engine...when I asked the boys to measure up his studs what was actually measured was the holes in the extractors that came off the engine, Ahh...... but I found out this morning when I went to the shed... the attaching plates rotate., so his measurement of 505mm was way off, it's actually 480mm. and that conforms to the measurement given by Pod...

Sorry about the mistake....all sorted out now, although the lad is a bit dissapointed it's only a 1200 and not the 1500 it was supposed to be....
