I tried all the VDO dealers and VW parts sellers 12 months back and was told they dont make them anymore?? Could'nt get one - maybe its changed?
I ended up getting one off a Passatt, which is adjustable, works OK but you end up whith a huge long tail on it. (I bent mine into a gentle circle so
its not poking out the top of the engine cover).
Hows it work? - just fine! Replaces the old dip stick with one that has a temp sensor in it. Wires connect to the top - simple!

i can get them here in Rockhampton from the local VDO guy.
i know they come in different lengths for different applications.
as for the fitment and installation, you simply remove your dipstick and adjust the sender to match the length and insert into the dipstick hole,
which is where it stays.
it is wired up with 2 wires.........
one goes to earth and one goes to your guage on the dash.
if you guys have trouble getting one, let me know and i will contact the guy here

Anthiron,
As long as you can adjust the length to suit the 1600 - no problem. Oil temp is oil temp.
VWRallycar,
Id be interested in getting the right one for my bug. If you can give me the guys number I'll give him a ring - Thanks !

You probabaly cant cut it down.
The wires connect in the end, and at the tip (other end) is the sensor. So it has to stay whole (as my passatt one did).
The Passat one had the stopper adjustable so you can adjust the length of the dip stick part that sticks into the case/sump. Little grub screw on the
stopper allows it to slide up and down the dip stick.
All you really need is the dip stick sender end to be in the oil (deep enough in the sump) and the dip stick hole to have some stopper or seal around
it. Should be easy enough to fabricate. To check your oil you just pull it out and use your old dip stick (thats what I do)
Ring me if you want - 0419 025129
Cheers

yeah dont cut them, all you do is adjust the stop on them and there is a felt seal to seal against the dipstick tube.
Mark the place is called VDO Instruments and the number is
07 49223645

I had a VDO guage and a sender that screwed into the sump plug hole. If I remember correctly the sender has the same thread as an early model
commodore and is readily available. Much easier than trying to find a dipstick sender.
I think it was $25.
Good luck.
