Gearbox clicking noise
Hey Guys, I've been having this clicking noise ever since i've done the irs and ej20 conversion, thought it was the cv or RHD wheels bearing,
swapped them over to the other side and its still doing it, but now after more prodding it seems to be coming from the right hand side of the
gearbox.
Well for a start its a 2nd hand single sideplate box that i got with warranty.
It clicks at the exact same spot every revolution (marked the spot on the tyre and it clicks when the spot touches the gorund etc).
The click seems to get worse, go away and come back every now and then, but overall it hasnt got worse since day one (i've done about 500km). It
seems to get worse when cornering, and goes away when braking (doesnt get worse when accelerating though). There is nothing catching with the brakes,
i've checked many of times.
When I jack the car up and rotate the wheel i can hear the click in the gearbox from around the right hand side diff area.
Any ideas? I hate gearbox's, and really dont want to pull it out, even with warranty, not at this time anyway, or could it be a side bearing maybe
that i can replace while its still in the car, i can only hope. Or can i just live with it? and replace it in winter when i wont be driving it?
Thanks, Andrew

What wheel studs do you have in the rear ? I had this happen to me because as my rear wheel bearings collapsed slowly and gave some play in the rear
drum, the wheel bolts (which were about 4mm too long) started to hit on the handbrake cable lever inside the rear drum.
Pull either the drum off (an have a look at the brake shoes etc for any rubbing / wear), or pull all you wheel studs out and look for wear on the ends
of them.
Also, pull the wheel off and rotate the drum - if you cant hear the click, its probably the wheel bolts protruding too far into the drum and hitting
something.

Hi Doug, yeah i thought it would be something easy to fix like this, but have checked everything around the wheel/hub area. I have brand new wheels
bearings, and pulled them out and checked everything was ok, swapped to the other side etc. Bearings are snug in the trailing arm and also the axles,
the spacer fits nicely in there too. Axle nut is tight.
I'm also running discs at the rear and there is definately nothing catching, I also get the noise with no wheel on.

Bummer, it sounds like it must be something internal to the gbox then.
Perhaps there is a damaged tooth on one of the gears or something.
