61 Beetle steering

My new 61 has massive amounts of play in the steering. I take it that the steering box is caput! Do i go for a rebuild or just replace. Cheapest option needed.

Cheapest option is to turn the adjusting screw in a bit, but not too far as the box will get hard to turn.

If it still has heaps of play and grabs every now and then as you turn it, then it is well and truly stuffed.

Matt it has about 1/3 of a turn of steering wheel before wheels start to move.

Check all other steering components first.
It could just be a tie-rod end.

phoar 1/3 of a turn, i thoughy my '63 was sloppy, moves about an inch in rotation.

Check that the steering box is adjusted, if not get a new one (about $250). Make sure its tightened properly as well. and like chewy said check the tie rod ends are good. Also check the king & link pins are good.

Check the rubber doughnut, too - it will allow a lot of 'slack' if it is stuffed. It might also kill you

On my old beetle ('69) when you took out the spare wheel there was a couple of little plates behind it you could remove.. one of them, when you took it off, gave you full view of the screw and locknut thing

Two guns i have exactly a 1/4 turn of the wheel. Jacked it up , only had a quick look but tie rod ends seem new(ish) and okay, rubber donut on steering a little worn but in one piece and box was covered in shite so i gave up for today! Job for the week! I hear a Corona calling!!
