kombi information and specs

ok im really really new to the whole vw thing. i hope this is the right section.

im pretty keen on buying a kombi. however i want to read up on some specs etc before i buy/get myself in too far.

the one im looking at is a 1971 kombi mini bus...seats 9...i basically want to know if ther is anywhere i can go to read about engine specs, like what models came with what sized angines...what years they where made, differences in models and engines etc etc.

also a question that fairly broad and im sure someone here can give me a fair answer to is, how will something like what i am looking at (the 1971 kombi min bus) go in terms of daily driving? many problems that are common in terms of reliability etc? and how easy if it to remove some of those 9 seats and put a bed or something in there....?

thanks in advance for anyhelp i can get...ive been a member of a fair few forums in my car owning days, from nissansilvia, to ausrotary and performanceforums...and now possibly to veedubbers, and the help from forums is always so good.

If you do a few searches on this site, many of the questions come up from time to time.
In '71 they came with a 1600 beetle motor (the only option) which remained basically the same from '68-'72 and continued as an option up to '79.
(actually the Brazilian made ones still run that motor today)
They are good reliable motors easy to work on, easy to maintain and cheap to re-build if needed.
As for the seats, they are all very easy to remove, just a few clamps to undo.
There are plenty around for sale, so if your after a camper or something different you may be better finding one that is already converted.

A brief run down on variations on the "bay window" Kombi are:
Disc brakes from ~'71 on.
From ~'72, '73 a complete new motor became an option called the type 4 motor (still flat 4 air cooled though). It started as 1700cc, 1800cc in ~'74, 2000cc in ~'76. Each had it's own GB to go with it as well.
Also some body changes most noticable, large rear lights in ~'72 and front indicators went from near bumper to near front grill in ~'73.

I suppose the best bay kombi's were the later 2000cc ones with more power and longevity of the motor, the down side is they cost over double to re-build than a 1600 motor. Also look out for auto's (very nice) and FI models (again very nice).
They are all good though, the biggest thing to consider in any old VW (or any old car for that matter) is rust. They are prone to it and can become costly to repair. Parts are not that hard to find and all reasonably priced.

Good luck!!
