Kombi Motor Swap

Hi all,

got a '71 Kombi with a dead motor. I know someone with an HO motor from a '69 beetle. Was a 1500 but has 1600 pistons and cylinders.

Just wondering if it will fit, and if not, what sort of mods are needed.

Thanks.

I've got a complete kombi 1800 motor going cheap if you need it.

Has three good cylinders - one needs attention but it runs.

Yeah, '71 is a t1 engine. 1800 is a t4 which won't fit a '71 kombi (without mods)

Thanks.

No. It won't. :(

it will fit into a split screen kombi, but from 1968 the engine is mounted at the rear, as the gearbox is not mounted at the rear. for this reason you need the rear engine carrier which you have mentioned which bolts onto the engine case with 3 bolts. the H 1500 case does not have these 3 bolt holes, so therefore you cannot put a 1500 sp beetle engine into a 1968 on kombi. also, an 1800 kombi engine (type 4) will not fit in without some major modifications to the engine (upright kit) or to the car (please don't do it).

sorry to be the bearer of bad news. the later beetle/type3 universal dual relief case will be ok to use, but not the 1500 beetle engine.

good luck

hmmm. my bad. i thought this didnt change until slightly later. i thought 68-71s still came with 1600 engines?
