advice to a kombi widdow!
Ok, I've got a question. Being the heathen that I am, I don't understand the facinations with kombis, but, a good friend has become
obsessed. What do I do now? Any ideas?

Normal.......
Experiance the comfort of driving a Kombi....better seating position, good view of the road, and no bonnet to look over.
Take up the challange, drive one for a day, sleep in the back, go for a cruise on a country road and see the comraderie of the kombi owners as other
owners wave as you go buy........and if you are unfortunate enough to break down, another kombi driver will always stop for assistance!
Come and join the brotherhood.........
Cheers

I would say those Kombi drivers that do not wave are a DISGRACE and I would like to think in the minority! In fact, I think other Kombi drivers who do
wave should be able to make a citizen's arrest and confiscate the vehicles of those who do not wave until they have learnt their lesson

I belong to another great road community - motorcycles - that also acknowledge and assist.
For my daily commute I've sold out & bought a car that doesn't break down every couple of hundred K.
Must admit, though, the beach buggy conversions are as cute as hell!

To test this theory I, a kombi driver waved to 18 bugs on my way back from the sunshine coast . I recieved 3 glare's 1 startled look and not one
wave. everyone else outright ignored me.
so here's what I say "get a real vw...get a kombi"

Bahaha...
Ok well i wave to every other VW owner i see on the roads...
Except for the new bugs....
Never got a single wave from them..
Most kombi owners just stick their nose up at me...
Oh well maybe we need to start a VW suburb and all move in with our vw's and wave at each other...
Or not....

If you can get your friend away before he/she has driven a kombi then there is hope. If not... well its worse than crack cocaine.
I aint waving to no steeeenkin type 1. Even the factory knows that type 1's arent worth the effort. What year did they stop importing beetles?
What year did they stop importing kombis?
3 kombi drivers looking down an an insignificant beetle driver :alien hahaha no wonder he's blue.
A few years back I was a member of an american VW group at yahoo (there were no aussie groups and its how I met Jay) about 3 years ago I think it was.
And a few people there were deadset serious about setting up a hippie VW commune.

I agree; buy one, drive it, sleep in it, and you'll be hooked like the rest of us.
I drove to Melbourne today and saw HEAPS of VW's, but very few of them acknowledged me, not even some of the kombi's!!

There is a vast difference between the biker nod of recognition & the kombi wave, & yet there are similarities.
The nod is a lot more dignified, you sort of acknowlege the other guys existance.
The wave is like finding some long lost relative.
The similarities, the wave is for other kombis. I will wave to a beetle if they wave first.
The nod is only for road bikes. Trail bikes or scooters are beneath me.

And let's not forget just how much crap you can stash in a kombi! And when it starts to look too messy, you can hide it all in the
cupboards!!!!
My biggest thrill when I first bought Walter was to play "let's see what fits". Garage sale shopping becomes a delight. I once fitted
seven bales of straw and still had full visibility over the top. (Hmmm, I'm starting to sound like a messy hoarder.)
And you can fit kids and dogs, and camping gear and.....
And you're up high and can see everything...
People wave at you and you can wave back...
And when you get too drunk to leave a party, you're guaranteed a comfy bed....
And my favourite favourite FAVOURITE thing is that you can't hear the kids in the back over the sound of your dying muffler!
AND... (I think I should stop now, you get the picture.

She dont backfire until shes on full throttle at high revs. In real life that dont happen with the awesome torque of the big block. Just slot her into
4th and leave it there.
You should change your ID to green. Cos you know you are green with envy. oh hang on. you ARE blue. Blue cos you are missing out on what we've

Daisy looks like she used to deliver Buttercup bread. When we got our first Kombi, it looked like a real shitheap but we found all these people in
Nice Kombi's waving to us, now we have a Nice Kombi we can wave to all the shitheaps, tried waving at beetles, we were either pointedly ignored
or stared at badly. So now we only wave to beetles who wave first.
I think one of the great attractions of the Kombi is the engine being at the rear I used to be a courier in the late 70's early 80's &
we did not use them because we could not slide large things in the rear
BUT having the engine under the front seat meant that our vans were very hot & certainly understeered quite horribly, the Jap vans of the time did
not have brakes as good as Kombis & to us the most wonderful thing is the walkthrough capability which must have also made it the most attractive
camper. |

Angela, Walter sounds like a honey, and I don't think it's possible to put ***too*** much in a car (if it was too much, it wouldn't
fit). Mind you that where my little car - ghost - got the nickname of 'mobile handbag'. The cheek of some people.
Hmm That sounds like a great new topic...

well .... as the cause of Lady D's truma and confusion I only have this to say...
Yesterday was my first vw meet, the night before I think I woke up 5 times just to make sure I wasn't sleeping in, yes it was dark but you never
can tell what time it is (there could be a chance of a solar eclipse) I know I had set the alarm, but there is always the possibility if random power
failure.
Needless to say my hubby was not impressed with my poorly restrained excitment. :bounce :bounce
10 mins from home I spotted the first vw heading in the right direction, started to get very excited, 15 mins later another 3.(at this point I started
shaking ) a couple of mins later 6 kombi's in a row ( by this time I was still managing to drive, Trembling slightly, there could possibly have
been some shrieking and much bouncing up and down on my seat)
My husband was desperately cluthing the dash muttering quietly to himself something along the lines of ....women....should have driven myself.....wait
until we get there before you get excited!
Hmph!! at which point he recieved a stern lecture as to how obviously he does not know what it truely means to adore your car , and if he could not
live with my perfectly "normal " level of excitement perhaps he should ride in the boot with the chairs! honestly, some people! at which
point he went back to muttering quietly about the ringing in his ears...well perhaps if he didn't hve his fingers jammed so far in.
I have never seen so many wv's together in my life!!!!!
I had an absolutely fab. time spoke to lots of great people and got to meet bluebus aka angela.
Lady D, If you thought I was nuts before, You ain't seen nothin....got to talk about yesterday!!!! what are you doing tonight ....and I will be
frisking you for ear plugs!!!
