DRAG BUG RE-BORN!!!!!

When I moved to Australia in 2001 I basically had to sell most of my worldly goods. This included my Kombi, `62 Bug, `73 Type 181 and my `68 Drag Bug project.
The drag bug needed the usual list of UK rust repairs (heater channels, door pillars, front and rear 1/4`s, floorpans etc etc) which I did myself. I planted the seed for this creation though. I cut out the rear firewall/luggage compartment, the whole front end was removed to make way for the flip front which is the same as the one fitted to "Moody", an old UK drag bug owned by Terry`s Beetle Services.
I also cut away the rear 1/4`s to accept the NACA Air ducts.
I also raised the transmission so that the rear wheels had minimal negative camber whilst still having a 2 spline drop(!)
I`m not sure, by looking at the photos whether the new owner (Danny Allen) has kept the raised transmission.
Anyway, I sold the car to a guy who owns a UK VW website, he was intending to use the car to promote his website but that didn`t come to much. The car was eventually sold on, untouched from when I owned it, to Danny.
My mate MAtt back in the UK told me on the phone a few minutes ago that it was at the Volksworld show the other day and here it is.......................................................

How fantastic is it that I thought I`d never see the car again and then here it is and at the Volksworld Show!!!!
Apparently he`s running a 1914 turbo motor, that`s about all I know so far. It`s due to run at "The Big Bang" in May(?) at Santa Pod Raceway.
Awesome!

I think it was in yellow primer when I saw some build shots of it.
Yeah Chewy, it`s changed a fair bit considering when I sold it it was just basically a full stripped out/cut away body in red oxide/ bits of old red paint, a floorpan with new halves welded in, the full "snowplough look" flip front, a pair of light weight fibreglass rear guards (well they were actually wings when I owned them!!) and fibreglass single skin W-Decklid which he doesn`t seem to have used.
Here`s a few pics......................

Well I was going to join the VWDRC until the whole plan went out of the window when I moved to OZ. I started it as just a Street Class car but the way I was going with it it would have definately been in Pro Modified. I don`t know whether the new owner is still using a stock `pan but I was getting to the point where I wa sgoing to build a tube frame chassis for it. It did have a Safety Devices 6 point roll cage in it for a while but that ended up in my `62 Old School/Rat Bug which I sold.
I`ve heard rumours that this cage has changed hands in the UK scene a few times because the VWDRC does not accept Safety Devices Cages, I bought it with full FIA Certification so can`t understand that. Probably because they are a bolt together cage rather than a weld int type. Just as strong though and MUCH easier to remove!
Looks as though it`s got a pretty serious cage in there now (if you can see past the chickie babe!), and looks like he`s running it in Pro Street from what`s written on the side window.

evening/morning all :D

i now own this car :)

mm lemme see what has changed since i bought it err i think the list if what hasnt changed is shorter lol

i cut out the front bulkhead and replaced it with a sheet metal version i fabricated, i cut even more of the rear bulkhead out, i fully seam welded the floorpans and rear raised trans mount, i remade the shifer mount, the ine skins have been completly hole cut for lightness, the dash has been cut out, i fabricated a full 8 point cage from cds tubing ( as 57 said the safety devices stuff is fia approved but not approved by the msa who control drag racing in the uk ).

the car is fitted with a 1914cc turbo motor i built myself and thei is coupled to a rancho pro comp gear box. I have done away with the rear torsion bars and run a custom built coil over set up, the front beam has been narrowed 7 inches and re angled to give 17 degress of castor to keep him on the straight and narrow.

lemme see what else have i dont to him lol

oh i changed the rear arches for some 3" wider ones and i fabricated the rear end engine cover, spoiler, interior and seat myself from aluminium.

wanna know anything else guys?

oh 57 mind if i copy these pics and use them on my website?

http://www.if-racing.co.uk  if your interested ;)

Hi Danny,
Good to hear from you mate.
Yeah the car was very much in the development stage when I sold it to John Eastwood, so I don`t blame you for changing a lot of the stuff on it.
Hey I`m just so chuffed that someone who shares the same dream got hold of it and followed it through to completion.
I love the way that you have built the car but am glad to see some of my original ideas such as the NACA air ducts in the rear 1/4`s and the "Bodystyle Glassfibre" flip front. I think that was the last one out of the mould before Bodystle closed down. That thing hung on my garage wall for about 6 years mate!
Nah, honestly mate, well done and all the best.
So what times you running??
Checked out the Big Bang website but saw no times. I see that "Engines"Neil Davies is into the 12`s now, he`s come a long way since his 18 sec KG!
Feel free to use those pics mate, what`s your website address??
Keep in touch mate.
Cheers
Gra.
