the big v8 question
G'day, great site blah, blah, just jokes!
I was just wondering if anyone out there has installed any v8's into their vw's. What mods did you do and are you able to get
registered(full rego). Looking at using a type 3 chassis as a base for a ...ahem.... kitcar. Any info related would be great.

A mate converted a fastback to a ute and installed an alloy Oldsmobile 355CI motor. It was great but we had 2 main problems. We couldn't keep
gearboxs up to it and we couldn't keep the front wheels on the ground.

http://www.kennedyeng.com has quite a list of adaptor plate for putting engines in
bugs - including some V8 engines.
Someone here (I forget his handle) in NSW has a 4.4 litre P76 engine (light - aluminium) in his bus.

please use quad cam V8 's or big Blocks (over 400ci ) otherwise your just "not serious "

hey
thats just it if u dont go big theres no point!!!! but keeping the g'box's upto it sounds like a task!!!!!
might have to modify the whole rear end to like a ford GT box and a big block 452 or new XR8 250 Kw mmmmmmmmmmm sounds like a plan!!!!

In answer to Quikbug's question - No, according to the information porvided, it is not a legal conversion. A quick look will show you a vic
number plate - the only possibilty would be another chassis with a beetle body registered as a "rebodied" - not bloody likely these days!!!
Not in vic, anyway... If it were real, it would have cost a creditable fortune (and probably been registered in another state.)

It never was easily legal but anything is legal if you can get an engineers certificate for it.
RTA says that replacement engines must be in the same location as the original & must be within 15% of the capacity or power(whichever comes
first) of the largest or most powerful manufacturer's engine option for that model of car to be able to get by without engineer certification,
strangly they aren't so strict on engine mods, in effect you can legally get more power from your original engine without the certificate than
you legally could with any other motor you could bolt in their.

Ok - so we takes an 1800 kombi engine (with the right engine number of course) - which is 12% larger in capacity than the 1600 bug engine), and
registers it that way.
Then we take the 1800 case and make it a 2600 Type4 engine with about 150hp and they won't turn a hair- right?
Hmmm.
There seems to be slight differences betwen states too - I'm told that here in Adelaide you can put a 2 litre engine in a bug - and that's
it - no specification as to what sort of engine as far as I know - it's a CAPACITY limit and that it.

Yeah i knew about the capacity thing.
Also i dont think (in nsw at least) you can go from a 4 to an 8. 6 is the most.
But capacity is hard to prove.
As aussiebug pointed out.
My rego papers say 1584cc but my engine is 2180cc........ no one can tell the difference....
