1200 to 1600,wat do i need?
hey i have a 1200cc 6v 63 bug and i am looking at puttin a 1600 in thats 12v,what is required to make a smooth changeover? isaac

Everthing.
including tinware, exhaust, also a bush for the starter motor hole in the gearbox to convert it to a 12 volt shaft.
You will also need to grind away some of the gearbox so the flywheel will fit(its bigger)
A voltage reducer for the wipers and you will need to replace all the bulbs(globes), dont forget the speedo ones.

hey i was aware of the electrical side jsut unsure of hte mechanical,where can i pick up a bush from,and how hard is it to grind away the gear box for
fit the flywheel?

Most beetle specialists should be able to get the bush.
And I have heard of people just fitting the gearbox and letting the teeth grind there own way, I wouldnt recommend it but you dont have to grind too
much away, just fit it and see where its catching.
The important thing is to use the correct tinware.

The bellhousing needs to be clearenced at the engine stud/bolt bosses and around the starter motor bush area.
Sometimes material needs to be removed from the entire circumference of the bell housing tho.

You will need a later 12v flywheel as well to fit the 12v starter. 12v flywheels only work with 12v starters, 6v flywheels only with 6v starters as
they have different teeth.
Make sure you have the clutch correct pressure plate as well, assuming it is the original early style tranny, you use the early Kombi pressure plate
which is 200mm (early beetle is 180mm) which has the early style center.

When I did my changeover, I used the 6v starter with the 6v flywheel on the 12v engine.
The 6v starter works fine on a 12v system, just dont crank for too long (as in when you are priming the fuel line) as it will overheat.
I have had no problems myself.
Another way (Im just pondering) is using the 1600 engine, with the 6v flywheel/starter and just changing over that generator (but using the 12v
fan),coil, sparkplugs and choke. That seems like it should work and sould like a lot less work.
