'Kill Switch'

This question will also be posed in the Off-Road section.

Once I have my buggy rego'd (few weeks?), I want to install some kind of kill-switch in the beastie, so that it is harder for someone to hotwire it. From what I understand, this involves some kind of switch / barrier that cuts the power from the battery.

I envisage getting an auto-sparky to install a simple toggle switch somewhere hidden in the car.

I have also seen another type which comes directly off the battery terminal, with a round screw section.....when you park the car, you can unscrew the dial and it cuts the power. You can also unscrew the dial completely off and take it in your pocket while you are away, stops anyone from finding the device and screwing it back in, and being able to take the car.

I know that you could just hook the buggy up and tow it away......and that it may be fairly easy for a competent thief to pinch it. But I want to put something in to stop the casual idiots from possibly flogging it.

I won't be looking at too much in $$ initially for this (cos it's already bleeding me dry!), so please - no electrified pop-up fences and savage guard dogs. But......all advice welcome. Thanks.

Im plannin on putting a ford type relay on the positive batt lead and putting a kill switch on the relay low voltage circuit.
Hide it out of the way and it should work good.
no power = no go.

I like Chewy's idea, how about one step further, instead of a kill switch controlling the relay, how about a remote control, press the button on a remote and the relay clicks to give power, press it again and the power is off.

I always say that security measures are not intended for the thief Like phantom said, if they want it they will take it), rather it is to keep everyday people, honest. ;)

i've made two kill switches for my buggy so far... both operate on the coil..

one is a hidden foot switch that is on the firewall under the fuel tank. this has to be pressed in to allow power to the coil when the ignition is on.

the other is a cigarette lighter (!!!). this is connected to the dizzy where the neagtive coil lead connects up to (just to confuse the thief even more!) and all taped together to hide... with the socket in the off position the coil is free to fire, if its pushed in, it earths the coil out and no power is supplied to the dizzy...

it will be easy as piss to hotwire the buggy under the dash so by doing it this way the would be thief will just get the shits thinkin it wont start... i may even do another one later on to cut power to the ignition running off a relay and another hidden switch...

everything dies baby, thats a fact..
maybe everything that dies one day comes back..
put your make up on and your hair up pretty..

air-fooled has the idea!!
My father in law came up with the same idea where by earthing the points out you disable the engine. No matter what they do, apart from run a new wire between the coil and dissy, the thing won't start. All you have to do is run a wire from the wire that connects the coil to the condensor on the dissy, and have that wire run to a switch that is earthed on the other circuit. Ten buck fix and good value. Just make sure all the wires are nicely taped together and they won't suspect it.
Have fun

You guys do know how easy is is to hot wire a buggy don't you? Cut off all the wiring to the coil except the one to the points. Put an wire from the coil plus to the battery and roll start it. To be effective you should try something different. For example cut off the fuel some how, make a detachable steering wheel or maybe even work out a way to lock the shifter in reverse??? That will stuff them.

I've left comment in the other "kill switch" thread.
