automatic or manual

From a non-mechanic. I recall travelling in a 1971 Superbug? which had either a split gearbox or both automatic and manual clutch - not sure what the terminology would be. In any case, you could drive in automatic or manual.
Could anyone explain how it works and whether the arrangement can be fitted to any beetle or kombi?
cheers and thanks

Howdy,
Their a Stick shift automatic gear box. I belive they started in 68. They are great fun to drive. Put it in a geear and fut down and off it goes, get to light cant be bothered changing down dont bother just go. U may remember when choosing gears the clunk as they were selected (of corse if you wanted to go fast u had to change gears and if you wanted to have good acceleration u changed gears again) but no clutch ;)
I love mine

P.S pardon my spelling in a hurry got dinner on
