Noisy ring and pinion in a kombi box?
I've got a (recoed) 1800 box in my buggy, and i find the whine on the freeway quite uncomfortable.
does anyone else know what i mean?
Is there a way to damp this at all?
my baby daughter has one good ear, so taking her long distances in the car is not good for her hearing. Probably not all that good for mine either, so
I've taken to wearing ear plgs when i have to go some distance.

You're running a subie with it right?
A higher powered engine has the tendency to push the pinion out.
Bolts thru the gearbox case and a plate "cage" can help to keep it all together when it wants to go west.

yep with a subie,
is anyone else having this issue?
But matt, the box has always been noisy, right from when the car was first finished. So I don't think it's a wear thing. And i generally baby it
too. Third is noisy at 70km/h, fourth gets noisy at about 95km/h, although it whiney down low too.

might not be crown wheel or pinion, could be gearbox or carrier bearing...
do you have access to another tranny to swap it with?

Dude if you got that recoed and you have to wear ear plugs to stop hurting your ears from the noise i would be getting that box out and taking it to
the guy that did the work and telling him to fix it and it had better be right this time.
Also your motor should not be hurting it unless you are trying to bag it up everywhere you go as a mate of mine ran a 300+kw rotor behind a kombi box
it did fail but never just cruzing only when he took it to the drags and trying to blow everything off good luck
Tim
You only need two tools
Wd40 if it don't move and it should
Duct tape if it move's and it shouldn't

I'll leave it for now. I'll have a chat with the mechanic, he's a mate anyway.

Mine is noisy too. Comes in at about 50kmh, and goes away at about 70kmh (with kombi 14 inch wheels). Its either getting better as it runs itself in,
or I am getting used to it.

Well, I not pulling it out at the mo anyway, so Maybe I'll change the oil and see how bad it is.
What sort of oil were you thinking Dero? it's already got the special Nulon gearbox stuff in it.

Well im not a full bottle on oils, I would just try something that is a heavier weight then the stuff in there now. This can help dumb down play in
bearings and slackness in backlash of gears, i think...
I had a datto with an extremly noisy box drove me insane, ran thinker oil in it and that helped till I got it rebuilt. It wont solve the problem.
I would only do it as a temporary measure though.
