Type 3: rain getting into air vent
Hi,
i have a type 3 1971. I am getting a leak when it rains and water seems to get into the air system that blows air onto the inside of the windscreen.
When I am in the car after it has rained heavily I get water coming out onto my legs when I brake suddenly or turn sharply (on either side of the
car). Also if i start going a bit faster water start to splash onto the windscreen slightly through the air vents. I feels like water gets trapped in
the air system under the dashboard? Is this possible? how?
Any ideas about how I can check this/ fix it? Any input welcome.

There should be two drainage pipes under the dash that can clog up with dirt and dead stuff. This used to happen with my type 3....I cleaned these out
[removing dead flies etc etc] and the problem was solved.

excuse my ignorance...what are these for?
Is rain let into the air pipes and then allowed to drain out? do the pipes drain straight out through the bottom of the car?
Also I was wondering whether I need to close the air intake levers next to the hand brake when it rains or does this not matter? |

Just weld the vents shut and piss off the air box and its associated rust trap. The quarter vents will put more air where you want it anyway...

Closing the levers will make no difference. One lever closes off the vents under the back seat, the other closes flaps in the heat exchangers in the
back of the car. The two black knobs on the dash open and close the flaps which direct the fresh air onto the windscreen or out the vents.
There is a cavity under the vents in the front of the car which then feeds into the big black, plastic fresh air box under the dash. There is one
drain hose from the cavity and another from the fresh air box. The drain hoses both exit through the front of the cabin, just in fornt of the bottom
of the fresh air box.
Pull both these hoses out and make sure they are clear, if they are blocked they will allow water to pool in the cavity or air box. Also look in
through the vents with a torch from outside the car and check for leaves. To do a proper job, you will need to pull out the fresh air box and give it
and the vent cavity a clean to remove all the mud, leaves etc.
It sounds from your symptoms like you could have a windscreen leak rather than a fresh air system leak. Check around the bottom edge of the
windscreen next time it rains and see if it looks wet.

yep clean out the hoses and wash all the dirt n crap out of the air box.... blow out with compressed air , or as Matt said piss off the air vent
n box n weld up the vents ...

I am with PurpleT3, it sounds more like a leak fromt he windscreen due to an old window rubber/seal. the same thing happens to mine but I haven't
had a chance to change the window rubber/seal, that is why I bought a waterproof car cover for my notch.
