in a Type 1 2 or 3 or any other older style gearbox use only 80/90 grade

140 is too heavy

From one of My 10 VW Workshop manuals...

The Volkswagen differential gears are of the hypoid variety.

Extreme pressure hypoid gear oil must be used because of the high tooth pressures and high rubbing velocities encountered in this type of gearing....

Care must be taken to see that straight mineral oil is not used in the volkswagen transaxle...
Use Only good quality SAE 90 Hypoid oil....

I'm not sure what I used until I find the plastic container..
I also added a tube of NULON to the gearbox oil....

I presume EP stands for EXTREME Pressure....
I do have a full container of Penrite 85/140 Hypoid Oil...
Its a GL5..... Might use it in My Lancer....
