removing hubcap on Oval

crazy question I know, but I seem to remember my dad having a special tool, I dont want to scratch the powdercoated wheels. & the hubcaps seem to fit really tight,
Funny thing is they must pop off sometimes due to wheel flex As I remember once in late 50's & once in early '60's that happening, managing to recover the cap both times undamaged, second time was in the dark, I remember the 4 of us looking for it for what seemed like hours climbing up & down embankments etc, must have been an expensive item in those days.
