surging!

We took the motor (1976 2.0L T4 duel carb) out a couple of weeks ago to change oil cooler. It was running fine before we took it out, now that its back in with its new oil cooler it runs like SH*T. Used to start perfectly everytime, now im having to give a bit of gas etc. At idle and full throttle it isnt too bad. But at part throttle it surges really bad. What might be a possible cause for it?

I think i have solved it. When we took out the engine we only touched the distributor cap to adjust the oil pressure sensor and must have put it back wrong. I took off the cap wiggled the rotor and then put the cap back on making sure it was on perfect..... the engine sounds ALOT smoother and starts easier. I think this was the problem, i am going to take it for a drive a bit later on when dad gets home (im on learners lisence) and see if all is good

ive had my bus since december last year. We rebuilt it and all that so hopefully by the time i get my P's it will be perfect. I get them in december :-( !!!

anyways took it for a drive, it wasnt surging as much but still didnt have alot of power and was pinging a fair bit. Took it home and retarded the timing quite a bit and it made a huge difference! It was alot more powerful and smoother. At idle it was still missing on the right hand side of the motor, we tuned the carbs a bit and played with timing and now its hardly missfiring, hopefully problem solved.
