Rear axle thud

Im in the process of just generally cleaning up and servicing a friends grandmothers 1965 beetle and need a little advice.

The car is a 1300 with a swingaxle rear end.

When driving, there is a rythmic thudding that is comming from the rear LH axle. It increases and decreases depending on speed, not RPM.
It is not very loud, but is definately noticeable.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas where I should start looking.

Cheers
Tnate

Tyres, wheel nuts/torque/loose, brake drum is where I would start. Prob tyres if it's a little old ladie's car. With respect, of course...

Yep, the car does sit still for weeks at a time, and they do look pretty cracked and crappy.
How would this cause the thudding though?
Just generally unbalanced or something? Is there a way I can test this (by raising, lowering pressure etc)

Thanks for the speedy responses

Probably a flat spot in the tyres from sitting in one place. Happens worse with the old cross plys. Generally when you get some heat in them from use it will soften then and disappear. But if they are all cracked then she would be better off replacing them. Safer for all of us!!!

Yeah, I know she should get a couple of new tyres.
She hardly uses the car, so I dont really want to start telling her that she needs to outlay heaps of money for a car that literally goes to the supermarket and back.

Thanks for the replies
