Transaxle Identification
I've got a transaxle that I was told came out of a 60 Beetle. It's not a split case so I doubt if it's out of a 60 originally although I'll
accept that it's probably Beetle.
Question is, what is it? Is there an easy way of telling or do I have to open it up and start counting gear teeth?
It's got the axles/tubes still attached if that helps.
Cheers

Hi
To get the ratios you can put it in gear, turn the input shaft and count how many times the axles turn V input shaft. Check to see if it has the large
6 volt starter bush, also 12 volt 1500 boxes had the V shape to hold the top engine bolt near the clutch lever, the later 1300 twin port box didnt
have the V shape because they had a normal bolt in that area as they had a doghouse cooler. The 12volt boxes used longer axles as well. It could also
be from a type 3, this will have dimples on the top & bottom of the gearshift rod and bigger rear brakes, 4 or 5 stud.

Thanks for the info Steve.
I dragged the greasy lump out from under the bench last night and gave it a bit of a more detailed look over. Under the crap I found the number
4921613. Looks suspiciously like a serial number to me. Would this correspond with the chassis number of the original vehicle? If so, that would
make it a late 62 Beetle box which seems about right.
