Golf Engine in a Type 3
I saw a Golf engine in the rear of a T3 Fastback in an old Australian VW magazine. I can scan in some of the pics if you want to see what it was like!
I'd be surprised if you could get it in the back of a beetle without some surgery!

It won't fit without cutting the deck lid. |

the last picture, the grey one. I am pretty sure that is James's car - aka Superman / Supe / etc - the guy i was telling you about.
He is the founder of Superbeetlesonly.com
Pretty sure he would be happy to tell you about it if you contact him.

ok heres the reason, i looked at a type 4 2litre, outcome..... to expensive
watercooled boxer..... way to expensive
subaru/mazda etc ....... no way
golf motor..... cheap to buy, reliable, quicker than an aircooled stock 1600 and i can get an adaptor kit quite cheaply.
so i thought i will look at this option now as the 1st two i cannot afford to do and the 3rd isnt going into my volkswagen.
nothing wrong with my aircooled flat four but just looking for that little bit more.
golf motors are very cheap to buy in relation to vw flat fours, so thats why i want to go that way.
thank you guys for the pics and your help
cheers
Andrew

Do you know roughly how much power they put out??
Id have thought building a 1916 or something bigger would have been similiar price with maybe more power?
What year model engine are u looking at?

staying air cooled is simple.
Have u weighed up the cost of a cheap golf engine and heaps of plumbing, wires, engineering needs, fabrication etc AND just hotting up your air cooled
1600 to a strocker or something a little smaller?
do some number crunching, it doesnt even appear in your options that you have thought of this.
KEEP IT AIR COOLED !

if ur going to the troble of going wtarecooled, why not just do a full conversion including gearbox and suspension? Hes a photo of a honda city, with
a camira engine in it. Put the whole lot in, struts, gear box , the lot, it goes really hard, trust me i was trying to catch it on a khanacross!!!! |

what i now wanna know is how the hell does this go from a beetle to a honda??????
anyway i thought i would start with a 1600 golf motor seeing i can get one very cheap. and the cost of parts for said motor are really cheap.
as for the fabrication side of it i am a fitter by trade so there will be no problems with that.

Good conversion I reckon . I fitted one to a customers off road racer and it went well. I'm putting one in a Manx now. Mark

what I was refering to was ur just doing an engine swap, would it be worth while doing a full engine suspension, transmission swap? |
