Type 3 Front Brakes

Okay, I noted on Beetleracing.com that T3 front calipers could be bolted onto a beetle and the piston size is bigger- fractionally(42mm vs 40mm on the beetle).

I've got the later 1302/ 1303 front calipers with the twin pin, area is 80 cm squared.

Does anyone have the area of the T3 pad, I can't find it in the manuals at the local library.

Anyone had any experience in using these on a beetle? Am I likely to notice much as I've already got the bigger beetle calipers anyway?

I've got T3 rears and they work great.

Cheers
Jeremy

I used the twin pin T3 calipers, with standard discs on my Beetle, and they were fine.
I then went for the late T3 calipers and T3 discs (they are different to the Bug ones) and there wasn't much difference, not worth the trouble.

Thanks Dave and Steve,

So by late we are talking after 71, which won't fit without modification? The pad looks the same size as the pads I've got for some T4 callipers I've got lying around.

I've been meaning to talk to Steve about this. Is that mod (fitting T4 callipers to Beetles) you used to do still about/ available?

The pad diagrams are great! Currently I've got DB-15, no more hassles at the pad shop trying to explain which one I've got :D

Cheers
Jeremy

The bigger Type 3 calipers are from June 72 on or so.

You have to make an adaptor bracket to make the bigger calipers fit to the origional stub axle as the bolt holes have a different spacing

I dont think its the pad area its more the bigger pistion that makes them work better. Something about less force greater surface area.

I have late type 3 rear drums and 68 Beetle dics on my Smoothieee n they work fine.

You probally wont notice the difference. But you will if your jumping from just drums all round
