#####TYPE 1 STARTER ISSUES######
I'm replacing my 1200 with a 1600 in a 61 beetle. Can i keep the 6 volt starter in the car without any problems??
I've heard many different views from many different people, whats the CORRECT way to do this??

6 volt starter works fine. ive got one in my car. it just spins faster. but i beleive u need to keep a 6 volt fly wheel.

The correct way is to change the starter to a 12 volt wich involves the minor clearancing issues of the flywheel/bell housing and the bushing of the
starter motor.
That said years ago i had a 6 volt starter on a 12 volt system
It spun twice as fast. Yes - i guess it will burn out one day but it lasted me several years like that.
The CORRECT way to do this is the way that lets you sleep easy at night

Hi
Are you changing to a 12 volt flywheel as well? Because the tooth count is different between 6 & 12 volt flywheels.

yep correct.
Gotta have the matching flywheel.
The solenoids seem to suffer from 12v moreso than the starters and to that end I have changed the solenoid from the oem 6V to a 12 thing from an old
holder grey motor starter.
This way the starters seem to last quite well. Yer they do spin the engie over pretty quick!

Thanks guys, you all have answered my queries! will go the 12 volt starter route, reliability is the key and i dont want to have to pull the engine
out again too soon.
