how hard is it to fix/fuel gaugue... not working at the moment

depends whats wrong with it? if its the voltage stabilizer its expensive. if its the sender not so expensive

We put a new VDO sender in our 70 Beetle and it was about $60
When the tank is half full, take the wire off the sender on the tank and touch it on the body somewhere which is bare metal and it should go straight
to full. If it does, and your guage was reading zero with half a tank, then you would be very inclined to replace the sender, or even check the one
you have got is earthed properly.
If the guage does nothing, check it has power etc. Ultinatley it may be the guage or the voltage stabiliser.

The Fuel gauge don't ordinarily cause any problems,
its usually the sender unit which does wear out or the small rectangular box on the back of the fuel gauge called
a voltage stabilizer....
All these items are available at wreckers... if You cannot afford a new one.... especially fuel gauges....
