Wiring Instrument cluster problem

One day I may stop asking for help, then again that day is not today lol. When I purchased my 73 super the lights in the speedo were not working and nither was the fuel gauge. In my quest for perfection in all the wrong places I took the speedo out and put back all the little globes that had fallen out. Checked the fuel gauge for power and put it all back. Fine. Well fine untill I started the damn thing. With the key in the start position (Just before cranking) the indicator rely buzzes like a mad thing and the gen light and indicator light is on. All goes away with the car running. OK so pull apart again read some more. SO I find that the earth on the back of the fuel gauge resistor(?) should be well earthed. Methinks to myself that those spare tabs on the body of the speedo should therefore be earthed. WRONG. The indicators buzz and gen light is on all the time. If I take off all earth wires to the speedo body I have no problems. The fuel gauge is still not working but now belive it to be the sender in the tank as one side of the gauge resistor has 12volts and the part that goes onto the gauge itself has intermittent pulses. Grounding wires at the tank end however makes no change. Anyway I am more concerned about the other parts at the moment and wish to fix the buggers. Anyone know of a picture of the rear of the speedo with the correct wires going in? Or any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (By the way I appreciate the help given before. It's nice to find a community like this)

PS: THe bits of wiring diagrams that I see around for American or English bugs should be the same for Australian cars shouldnt it?nn[ Edited on27-8-2005 by electricmonk ]

The voltage stabilizer will be bung on the back of the fuel guage. It should tab into and out of the stabilizer and into the gauge.

I took speedo out of 75 which should be same.

Took a photo of a spare speedo printed and then wrote what wire went where prior to removal

Let me source this in the garage and I will get back to you
