Adjusting the twin Carbies on a '77 Kombi?????
I recently had my carbies rebuilt by a local mechanic... They don't seem to be particularly good at tuning since both my van and my girlfriends
beetle constantly have issues with the carburettors.... I don't want to take it back to them but i don't have the money to go elsewhere for the time
being...
At the moment my girlfriends bug (Original 76 L Bug)seems to clog its airfilter up with black soot within a month or two of it being changed... so
much so that it chokes the car and it stalls.
Also, since the rebuild on my carbies in the van, the idle seems to be incredibly high but settles down when you give the accelerator a tap... I
thought it might just be a sticking cable/linkage or something but i've checked them all and even given it a rev by grabbing the cable in the engine
bay... I am so totally in the dark on this one.
I know this one's a big request but could anyone give me some advice, mostly about how to tune the twin solex setup on a '77 kombi?
Thanks so much |

i had something similar on my bug with it clogging the filter and it had blow-by and was pressurizing the sump basically pumping the oil out it to the
filter. the motor ended up dropping a cylinder at 110km in a week or so after

re the L bug
Yeah - you could try disconnecting the pipe from the oil filler to the air filter.
If it stops clogging the the filter then that is your problem

Bugger.... so basically I'm assuming if the sump is pressurising then it's something along the lines of piston rings, or the cylinders causing
backpressure... or something like that??? |

mine was caused by one of the pistons having an air gap down one side past the rings caused by pinging hence the compression and expanding gases from
ignition were going straight to the sump.

Basically yes.
out of round cylinders
ring gaps not off set
broken rings
But check first. Disconnect that hose.
If it was THAT much blow by on a 1600 i would have thought you might have noticed a lack of power.
Also the black would be oily not sooty??

The first thing the " MECHANIC " should have done isa compression check to see if all was equal. You carnt tune an engine if 1 cylinder is out
of wack.

mmm... all sounds dodgy... i'll definitely take that pipe off and see what happens.
See i figured exactly that... if it was oil it would be oily, not sooty... but i'll check it and see what happens.
My girlfriends not happy with the place we've been going to, so we're gonna take both our cars somewhere else now.
The carburettors on my van were completely dismantled, cleaned, checked, and put back together.... it's doing a really annoying thing where it over
revs... it feels like the throttle is stuck but when i check all the linkages they are exactly where they are supposed to be... yet when i rev it,
sometimes it settles down, sometimes it doesnt. Seems completely random... it tends to lean more towards over revving and sometimes idles nicely.
Really starting to get on my nerves now cos it's using up all my precious petrol. nn[ Edited on 31-8-2005 by fekkinell ] |

I took the van over the the guys at Volkspower in Burwood... problem solved in 10mins flat... a quick tune of the carburettors and a new return spring
on the right hand carburettor as the old one had lost its springiness then sprung itself off entirely
Thanks for the advice people, was much appreciated |
