Please help, Suzuki wift fuel system issues. (Not VW)

For the first time in it's whole life, our elderly swift has broken down. I traced it to a broken fuel pump. This was ok until I had to replace it which involved dropping the whole tank...which was half full. Took me 3 goes to find the right pump and now it will not pump properly. I assume the system should be self purging but it is not. The pump is running fine from what I can hear, but there is no petrol reaching the filter which is right next to the tank, or the carby.

Any ideas?

I have to get it fixed tonight so the boss (wife) can drive it tomorrow.

And yes the tank has plenty of fuel in it.

but it didn't seem to help. I have to say, even the buggy is easier to work on. :(

nope, there is plenty of fuel flow when I suck on the fuel hose in the engine bay. It seems like the pump is not pumping the fuel up out of the tank. Stuffed if I know why. The tank is half full and the pump should be pulling it up into the line no probs.

Doesn't look like it. Managed to get the old pump to run for a second. Seems like it only runs in one direction. The other direction. Oh another fun day tomorrow. I get to drop the tank for the second time and pull the whole pump assembly out again.

Thanx for the tip Squizy, but the link doesn't seem to be working...:duh :D

And to be fair, the car has done 245,000km and all we've replaced is tyres, battery and brake pads up until now. It was probably the closest thing to a beetle my wife could buy at the time. Cheap, light, not real pretty and not real powerful. Still all it has to do is last til the beginning of next year, then I can buy something new......sadly VWs are too pricy or too small for us (read the wife). It'll be a HDi pug wagon or a subie. :(

The Suzi's are a tough little car - as you say, nothing special but they just go and go and go.... not enough power to hurt themselves.

The company I work for runs 80 (no thats not a misprint) of them as delivery vehicles - so imagine the hardest you have ever driven your car, then thats about the easiest that our swifts ever get driven. The only regular problems so far have been the drivers side window reg failing and the gearboxes only last about 2 years (18 year olds attempting clutchless gearchanges make sure of that!).

Hope you sort out the problem with yours ASAP.
