Subynotch is up and running
hey everyone, i finally got my site up. Its still in the early stages, but it pretty much documents most everything on my conversion of a 73
notchback to ej power. Right now the car is very drivable, and is my daily driver once again.
I feel the site can actually walk people through the major parts of the conversion, if anyone feels i missed some parts, let me know, ill add them.
I don't think ive ever even posted pictures of it on these forums.

Rubyred - not that it matters, but all this time, I thought you were in Australia, not Ca!! Nice work. After being involved in a Type 3 Fastback
conversion, I will be doing a Notch next and will incorporate some of the ideas you have used, such as flipped manifold. Good work, nice site. I know
registration laws are different in the US, but what did you do for brakes? Do you have to upgrade?

Ya, im in CA, this site has probably provided me with the most info, if you ask anyone around here, usually you get a negative response regarding
putting a watercooled import motor in a aircooled german car.
As far as brakes, i installed 4 piston wilwood calipers allround. They stop pretty well, the pistons are enourmous. I actually had the brakes in
before the swap because i ran into a guy who raced forumula Vee on the type 3 suspension and he sold me this brake setup used.
As for registration, They dont have the same procedures here. Since it is pre 75 i dont have to smog it. It is basically just registered as a stock
73 notch. There are no engineer approvals here that i know of either. I just have to cross my fingers haha.

We didnt get notches . weird thing is that i bet most of the notchback
population was brought here to california haha. So ya, any notchback here was brought here from canada, germany, australia etc.
I wish i had access to another late model notch.

haha, funny thing is a few of my buddies and i were just talking about saving up and goin to australia to race/have fun with cars for a month or so.
They would have access to their jdm cars, and id be able to learn vw track racing setups get to try out some of your guys' circuits.

you can actually get new wilwood calipers like the ones i use for relatively cheap. I believe ive seen them for 150 each new and ive seen them go for
50 on ebay before(USD). i bought them used for alot less, but ive seen new type 3 calipers listed for that price. but you have to work on the mounts
etc.

What type of modifications are required to the mounting flanges on the front stub axles in order to fit the Wilwood calipers?
They look like they would stop anything! I have never seen that style of caliper adapted to VW and still use the standard disc, any info would be
great.

it is basically just a little flange with 2 holes welded to the front spindles, i think wilwood sells them, you just have to customize them for your
own application.
I plan on installing a steering brake and hooking it up to be a hydralic e-brake. And then maybe hooking the other side to the front, so i can stage
or something.
