Damage from Wednesdays hail storm

Hi all,

Some of you may have heard the news reports that some of the northern suburbs of the Gold Coast were hit by a violent hail storm on Wednesday - unfortunatly both my Brother and I have felt the effects of the hail and have both been quite busy making repairs to our houses and organising insurance claims.

My house (in Helensvale) suffered a number of cracked tiles on the roof, a smashed skylight in the kitchen (and some minor water damage as a result) and the garden was shredded. My wifes Pulsar, my Audi and my Company car all took a beating from the Mango sized hail stones - the Pulsar my still be a write-off...just waiting for the insurance company to make a decision....

My Brothers house (in Pacific Pines/Gaven) has dozens of broken tiles, many of which fell in to the ceiling causing major water damage (light fittings full of water, and water running through the manhole in the laundry and then through the laundry floor and into the garage below) and a couple of broken windows.

Thankfully all of us and our pets survived without injury, which is the main thing...but it's going to take time to clean this mess up! :(

I took some time on Saturday to take a couple of pics of the damage to one of my Brothers almost completed project cars which had been moved into the back yard so that he could use the space in his garage to do rust repairs to his Baja. He had almost finished painting the car, but will have to start again, first removing the dozens of small (and not so small dents)...Grrrr.

I know that there are other Members of AVD in this area - how did you go? Were you even affected? I hope that the damage was not too bad if you were.

Here are a couple of the pics I took of my Brothers cars - the blue one is a '66 and the red one is a '58. The blue one is the car with almost all the damage and, of course, is that car that was almost finished. Thankfully, no broken glass on either car.

R :) (or should that be :( )

..the only things left to paint on the '66 were the bonnet, LHF guard and both rear guards.

This is the LHF guard which was reasonably straight before the storm - it certainly didn't have that massive dent in it, or most of the scratches either....

...the RHF guard suffered similar damage too - this guard was already painted, but as you can see the hail stones (or were they boulders?) took some of the paint off as well as installing a few large dents....

...imagine the size of the hail stone that did this damage - the roof is bent, just beside the gutter, but so is the gutter - it was straight when the car was painted.... how hard was this hit?!?

...you can see in the following pic (and the pic above) other paint damage to the roof.... we wern't sure how this happened until a friend of ours (yes Barry, I mean you), told my Brother that the roof of his Baja was caved in due to the weight of the ice and water... we think that this may have happened to this car too, but the roof had popped back out before we saw the damage...

...last shot for now - this is another pic of the damage to the roof - there was also many of the usual poc-marks in the '66 and a few in the '58 too, but I'm sure that you all know what they look like...

Looks like we have even more work on our hands now! Like we needed that!

Bugger!!!
I am glad that it didn't hit Bris last week. I was away and my subie was in the drive.
Hope that most of the dents pop out, but bummer about all the painting required to be redone :(

Damn....................It is so disapppointing that all the work that is put into your cars is blown out the window in such a short time...............good luck with the cars and, of course, the houses. There is nothing worse than having your house damaged and the ensuing problems with insurance companies, builders that book times and then don't show, things not fixed the way they were before, etc, etc.

Good Luck

Kathy and Marc

Unlucky :(

I saw the storm coming on Wednesday and I managed to squeeze 4 cars into the 3 car garage. but while reversing the bug I hit the shoe rack and put a dent in the wall!

I guess the good thing is that cars are repairable. pets and people are not!
