carbi air leak
hiya, in my beetle i have a 1600 single port, which for some reason has an air leak around the carbi so it idles like crap, but when we spray around
the carbi with carbi cleaner it runs really well, we tried a different carbi and same problem,
is this a common problem? do beetle engines get cracks in the manifold easily or do i just have 2 crappy carbi's.
Ryan will be on later so he can explain the problem better than i can just thought i would see if anyone knew a bit about this.

Ryan here, been farking with this thing all afternoon, only good thing is I'm getting paid to do it (I think)
new gasket, carby mounting face is flat, vac advance line is blocked.
both carbs, same thing, shit idle, idle misture screw does jack all to fix it, and a quick squirt of carby cleaner, or choking it with hand across the
top of the carb makes idle speed pick up and smooth out.
its a pretty random missfire, well more of just running rough rather than misfiring, it seems it may have a cracked inlet manifold, or corroded
underneath the alloy? covering where the preheat tube is connected to the mani.
before I go pulling everything apart to fit a new inlet, is it a reasonably common thing to see them crack? and its a single port, so no joins in the
inlet at all.

just to be safe do you guys have a mate or know some one with a spare manifold ? if so just change the mainifold 1st with the new seals this way hopefully you'll be able to cross another possiblity off the list at
next to no cost

It may be the throttle shafts worn and sucking air in that way after all the carbies are 40 + years old

the shafts do have a little bit of play in them, but it seems like not enough to cause as big an airleak as the car seems to have, and also it wasnt a
gradual problem, it was running well, then started runing bad. worn shafts should get progressively worse.
I'm thinking its probably manifold or seals, but I dont have a spare, and I dunno if I can really be bothered pulling it all down to change it over
