Monitoring Engine Temperature
Hi, I have a 1600tp in my 74 Kombi. I have no idea what temp it's running at but suspect it's hot. I would like to fit a temperature gauge. I would
like something accurate. What is everyone using and where on the engine do you tap into for best results.
Photos would be great but any response is much appreciated.

i use a dipstick sender which just replaces the dipstick. its a vdo unit that i got from repco along with the guages
|

Hey, Im using a specco oil temp gauge, tapped into the sump plate (??). Cost me $45 from ebay. Here are some pics, hope this helps.

Thanks "76camper" and "barls".
I think i'll go the tapped into the sump type.
Does anyone have some for sale or know where I could some??
This may sound silly - do volkswagens run with higher oil temps than water cooled engines? I would have thought so - therefore will an off the shelf
universal oil temp gauge read high enough to display where a volkswagen would run?? Might be a dumb question but I am new to VW's.

Hi, I've got a stock 1600tp in my '71 kombi and I have recently fitted an electronic speco water temp gauge using a steel "T" piece where the oil
pressure sender is.
Around town its between 75 to 80 deg and on the hiway its between 80 to 95 deg.
electronic sender is the way to go cause then there is no oil lines to run to the front of the kombi.... only a wire.

Yes
air cooled engines run hotter than water cooled engines
The Oil cooler helps keep the temperature down too...
Not sure on the gauges though...

Otherwise a cylinder head temp gauge tends to give you the most accurate measurement of engine temps - especially overheating which will ultimately
affect bearing life etc will show up faster at the heads compared to the lag in oil temp increases.
I know I've read stuff on shoptalkforums.com in the type4rum section about the CHT gauges - basically it is a sender that sits under the spark plug -
but from memory there is a trick to get it to sit right on the type 4.
I run an oil temp gauge in the sump on my 2L type IV in my beetle - oil temp will be higher in aircooled applications (Same for my old man's flat 6
corvair aircooled engine)....and mine is running high but the engine is hot anyway. I have to sort out timing and tuning issues.

you just need a gauge that will read upto say 120 degrees. Definantly go eletric.

do those gauges on eBay come with sender (they do need senders right)?
A temp gauge is something i want to get for the kombi before i start doing long highway driving.

they arent that expensive mate i think the small vdo gauges are under a hundred and so is the sender depending on which one you use

try to sit the sender somewhere where there will be a decent amount of oil flow around it like the sump.

These sound like a good thing - does anyone run one in a 1600 or are these generally left on a wish list due to - oh I dont know - expensive maybe, or
difficult to set up.
Has anyone got one - how much - where from??
