Do you have a VSS correctly installed. Mine played up a little until that was fitted.

At the end of the day a fuel injection/ auto elec specialist should be able to help. I would not recommend a Subaru mechanic. It is the fuel injection/ auto elec specialist that focusses more on idle and running of motors than stuff like brakes, tyres, washer bottles etc.

A couple of things all motors are tuned to respond to in terms of idle speed/ fuel mixtures.....temp sender, o2 sensor, map or maf sensor. Also what is the storey with your idle up valve..is it still active. It might be sticking open.

When are you coming to Sydney?

OK, to do a diag check...

1. turn off motor.
2. plug green plugs together
3. turn ignition (only) on, DO NOT turn motor over.
4. allow ECU to test various components. takes about 30secs, fuel pump will turn off and on a few times.
5. turn off ignition.
6. unplug green plugs
7. plug in black plugs
8. turn ignition on and watch check engine light.

long flash = first number in code
short flash = second number in code

eg. long long long pause short short = 32

9. dissconect black plugs before running the motor.

to reset the ECU and wipe the codes, disconnect the battery and allow the car to sit unpowered for 2 minutes. If you want to check that you have particular problems, repeat the diag check after reseting the ECU the first time. THis will mean you are getting the real problems as opposed to any residual flow on problems.

BTW, my engine is throwing codes at the mo too. Just need to figure out why, I don't actually think there is anything wrong as it is running fine aside of the codes. Might be time for a new timing belt.

Hi Neil,

My engine developed an idle problem a few weeks back as well, ran fine, no fault codes, just idled rough. I put in a microtech ecu the other week and all the little problems have dissapeared!

I now have a spare ECU and afm if you want to try them?

The only problem mine had was before I actually hooked up the VSS. No problem while idling and reving in the workshop, but as soon as I went for a drive the check light came on. The idle stayed real high after that.

Then I fitted the VSS, reset the computer, went for a drive and everything is sweet as.

It's all finished, I just can't drive it :(
