can some one tell me how to change the following

I need to change my oil and air filter in my beetle the engine is a 1500 and the beetle is late 68 early 69. can someone tell me how to do this please. i know i propably should take my car to the mechanic but can't afford too, and have decided to learn to do it my self and save a few dollars in the process. can you also tell me what sort, number oil filter to use? pictures would be helpful.

one other thing when stopped at lights i but my car in first when i go to move when lights turn green car struggles then stalls it is almost like it is not in gear, but i know it is. just had the whole clutch system replaced. can someone tell me why this is happening and the possible cause?

ok if ur engine is stock then there is no oil filter.

u have an oil screen which u should remove and clean with thinners or some sort of solvent.

if u look under ur engine u will see a plate that has a large bolt in the middle (19mm from memory) u want to loosen that bolt with a bucket underneath and try to get it off without dropping it in the oil bucket as this is the oil drain plug and then u have to fish around in the oil to get it.

give it 10 or so minutes to fully drain.

then undo the surrounding bolts and remove the plate. keeping all the little gasgets.

u should see the oil screen above that. u need to take that out (i forget offhand how they attach)

and clean it. put it back in, put the plate back in, put the plug back in and fill with oil.

as for air cleaner. is it the black oil bath type? if so just undo the collar that tightens it onto the carby. remove it from the car (careful its filled with oil, keep it level)

undo the catches and remove the top. tip the oil out, give it a good clean with thinners or some solvent. and then top up with oil to the marked line. then put it back together and back on the carby and tighten the clamp.

ps: are the arny other problems with your engine? does it idle nicely? back firing? lack of power? what distributor do u run? (does it have a biscut shaped thing on the side with vacumm lines running off it? or does it have no biscut shaped thing and no vacumm lines?

are your vacumm lines all connected with no leaks? have u got your points timing and carby set right?

just looked under engine oil thing makes sense now will do that this arvo. not sure on this though "what distributor do u run? (does it have a biscut shaped thing on the side with vacumm lines running off it? or does it have no biscut shaped thing and no vacumm lines?" where is distributor when i look at my engine? soory when it comes to cars i don't know much but if i have someone explains where things are i am normally right.

she idles fine no back fire and no lack of power. except when she stalls, like i said. apart from that she is fine.

thanks i knew where the oil filler was though as i check and top up my oil myself, the joys of owning a car and not having a male to do it for me but i don't mind. the thing that looks like a brake fluid reservoir but in the wrong spot is actually for the lead substitute that goes in my car. not sure how it works was there when i brought the car so i keep that and the oil topped up, and check brake fluid also, all my self

thanks bizzare for the link very helpful indeed.

thanks anthiron for the diagram very helpful

The bottle on the right hand side of the engine is a reservoir for Flash Lube. I use the same on my 2 litre though I wont get into the argument of whether to Flash Lube or not. If fitted it will inject a couple of drops every so often into the inlet manifold. It should be kept full of Flash Lube or disconnected or it will inject air. Using such a device saves putting it in at every fuel fill up if you use such additives.

Hi - the clutch bit sounds simple.

if you've just had a clutch put in then the cable has probably stretched and needs tightening. You can check this inside the car - if you put your foot gently on the pedal it should sink about an inch to an inch and a half towards the floor before you get any genuine resistance. If it's more than this you need to tighten the clutch cable - not difficult to do, but you'll need to jack up the car (safely!) and a pair of vice-grips to get under there and tighten it - or a friend with a car pit.

If you took this to a mechanic it'd probably take 2 minutes and cost 5 bucks.

If it's not a stretched clutch cable then it'll be tuning.

Sounds a lot like you need to get yourself a copy of "How to look after your VW for the compleat idiot" by John Muir. It's still available new in reprint and has all the info you need for a basic service - which it also sounds like your dub desperately needs!

The bad new is that the manual is around $50 and a basic set of tools and parts for a service will set you back around $100 - $120 on top of that. Cheaper in the medium term, and a lot of fun, not so in the very short term. There are also a couple of online vw manuals, but none are nearly as good.

Perhaps a library near you has a copy?

Either way, good luck :)
