here is the system in the temp
this is fed from a kenwood head deck.
im going something similar in chaos, but its going to be 2 6x9 3 way clarion speakers in the rear with 2 6.5" 2 way clarions in the kick panels fed
from a kenwood head unit with hidden 6 stacker

das this is a question for you.
having the tweeter part of your components so close to your woofer, wouldnt that damped the sound of the tweeter and give you less clarity than if the
tweeter were placed higher?

No, there is no phase cancellation (dampening) of the sound from the tweeter and woofer as they replicate different frequencies (as dictated by
equalising the different bands via head unit).
The only problem is trying to obtain optimal stage height with the tweeter down low (I tried to make the pods so they were as high as physically
possible). Ideally from a sound quality point of view it should sound like the music (eg band) is coming from in front of the car (say at the front
bumper distance), from the centre of the car (time alignment feature in the head unit helps this) and from close to chest/head height. During judging,
the only aspect of my system which scored below average was stage height, but unless you place the tweeters at the lower edge of the windscreen
(a-pillars), there is not many ways around this in the beetle.
The other problem is phase separation if you do separate the tweeter from woofer - ie. you can tell the different sounds (mids vs highs) are coming
from different places. Some people run ambient tweeters high passed at low gain to help raise the stage height, as well as the tweeters close to the
woofer. Also another note is normally you want to maintain both the woofer and tweeter on the same axis (ie. pointing in the same direction) unlike my
setup - but ultimately unless you want to compete in SQ comps, it is not that critical.

Bump
I'm currently installing although I don't have a head unit. Speakers going in next weekend. Finishing boxing today I hope. Running wiring and
placing amp. Think I might ebay the head unit unless down the street has 40% off their units in the near future.
Will post pics when it looks tidy enough.

I made my own speaker pods and sub box;
I have new 6x9's in the back too, X pattern plastic ones like in the front doors.

Well my project is going slow - New child brought things to a grinding halt but the wheels are back on the cart again.
This is the speaker set up I have designed. I have created a false parcel shelf in the rear to hide the speakers because I go bushwalking and worry
about the car being unattended for hours on end. The sight of a sound system might be too tempting for some.
Some light weave carpet will go over the top and the amp will go against the wall. A sub will sit central behind the rear seat. The rear seat will be
recovered to allow the sound to travel forward through the back rest material.
I have 200 three way 9 inch speakers in the rear, will put 6x9's under the dash facing down and the head unit in the glovebox. From the outside it
will look as if there is no sound system at all.
Currently looking for a headunit I can get fairly cheap. The Baja is very loud so I'm not chasing sound quality - just reasonable volume and good
bass. I will put some quality speakers under the bonnet facing forward for enjoying the clear crisp melodies of Pink Floyd when around the
campfire.
Would anyone like to recommend a quality cheap headunit if there is such a thing. I has to have an audio in jack either front or rear on the unit.

So how are you running OSX? Have you got a mac mini and then used an indash tv as the monitor? Any chance you can u2u me some links for emulating
software?

just a quick question, what are you guys using to charge your system?!! Im looking at installing a mid sized setup but just wondering if the 55amp
alternator will keep up or do i look at modifying like a commodore alt or something?!

parra if ur going for a "mid" sized setup a reasonable sized battery (about 480CCA) and 55amp alt should handle it fine
i run mp3 headunits with ipod interfaces, decent splits+ 6.5"s and 2x 10" subs in all 3 of my road going cars
its one of the best all round combos
i have a 1.5farad capacitor in my white bug but its really not needed
iPod interfaces were one of the best inventions ever
i havent had CDs in my cars for ages and i have nearly my entire music collection at the touch of a button
anyway to stay on thread heres the system in the Lbug

Hi Dub74L,
How did you get your headunit to sit snugly in your dash? Did you modify it? My headunit seems to be a bit small for the original hole in the dash and
it moves around a lot. Or maybe you just have a slightly bigger one than me and so it fits better

has ur bug still got the original plastic plate that the radio mounts to
nearly all Lbugs i see are missing that and pp just chuck the radio in there not secured to anything
mine had it but i made a new panel out of alumium and covered it with carbon fibre so i could fit extra gauges
also if its not sitting down flush with the panel if u still have one it would be the areil connection
most Lbug need a 90 degree right angle fitting for the areil connection so the radio can slide in far enough to sit flush

Hmm Ok no I dont think we do have the plate so I guess I'll have to source one from somewhere or find someone to make one. I wonder if you can get
affermarket ones? I assume you can..

mmm tasty type X and focal i like!,
as for a suitable battery try to get the biggest you can, (the bigger the better), a high amp hour is essential, something like a optima d34, some
will use multiple in a parralle config. if your gettin serious u may need some dual alternators or maybe quad alts, or just get one big one, i have a
cvr and is rated to 200amp, then only use 0g cable and do the big three, all your grounds doubled at least is a must to prevent voltage drop.

hey,
i've just a couple of quick questions:
are people buying the front speaker pod set-up's (the one's in the foot well's) or making them?
and as I have a square back, there isn't a great location to put a sub. Is it worth putting a smallish (10") sub under the back seat?
