Torsion Arm/Tube bushings - removal

Hi,

Giving the beetle a pretty complete overhaul and am looking to install urethane bushings into the front torsion tubes instead of the existing needle bearings.

However. It seems a little difficult to remove the old roller bearings. Any tips on how to do this?

If it all seems too hard I'll leave the existing ones in.

Cheers,

Tim.

Unless you are doing some serious offroading leave the stock bearings in.

After I cut it

............the bearing just fell out :-)

I have used a puller, but a slide hammer would work

You can drive them out from the opposite side or use a circle of metal and slide hammer the bearing out
after the circle(with a nut welded to it) is inserted behind.
You will have to cut the sides off the circle to get it behind the bearing.

Thanks Dave,

It's these simple things that my brain just really struggles with at times - I've never done any kind of "metalwork" so this simple operation will hopefully open this mind of mine up a bit...

The beetle's getting the revamp to undertake charity rallies so I want it to be pretty beefy and hopefully last 8-10,000 back road kilometres. I also want to learn this stuff for future cars so I'm trying to find a good way to do things the first time.

Cheers.
