Gearbox Whine

G'day Guys and Gals

Have two Questions:

1. Have tried moving shifter fromone extreme to the next but am struggling to get reverse - it actually engages but must inly just be engagin under any load say reversing up a hill it opos out and grinds even if you hold it there?

2. What would make a gear box whine slightly in 3rd but more so in 4th ????

I had a gearbox rebuilt a number of years ago so the gearbox should be in good condition.

Its full of oil - so you can eliminate that fromthe equation.

I think the 3rd and 4th gear are lower ratio (for drag strip).

Something else that may be worth mentioning is I think 3rd and 4th are welded together for strength??

Cheers

Brad

Sounds like the reverse gear is worn, and jumping out. the box will need to be pulled down to repair this.

With the noise in 3rd and 4th, if they are close gears they would be aftermarket gears and made for racing not street so may be cut for high strength not quiet runing, my close 3rd and 4th gears are noisey too.

Has 3rd and 4th been noisy since it was rebuilt or is that somethin new?
When the ratios are welded, the bore closes down, and this must be corrected before assembly.(honed or rebored)
But knowing that the noise is louder in 4th that 3rd, it may be related to one of the bearings on the pinion shaft.
One of those bearings is very expensive and is rarely repaced during a rebuild, and the reverse problem needs, as Dave said, total dissassembly.

Thanks Guys.

I orginally bought the gearbox of Keith Heusler -have been trying to get in contact with him to see if he can recal what it was like but no luck with response as yet....

Any body in the forum know him and maybe direct him to U2U or this post would be great.

not holding him responsible so there is no worries there (may not even be a problem etc)

Cheers

Just a thought as i had this problem only last week in my manx ( 1500 swinger box ) in front of a 1835 that my shift shaft bush (in the tunnel just under and to the rear of shifter) had disintegrated causing gears not to be fully engaged as to what you think with stick location, alternitivly HATE TO SAY IT but gearboxs don't last forever when flogged.

Just a side note after getting the box originally it has been fully rebuilt professionally (a couple of years ago) but has never been used (has sat in a pan which was undergoing resto) - first run was last week (with a stock 1600). There is a super diff, heavy duty side plate, custom mainshaft, and yes they low ratio 3rd and 4th (welded) all in the IRS box.

My original thoughts were the same as Dave's (menangler) above in that the whine in 3rd and 4th was not abnormal due to the nature of the upgraded gears (although I am certainly no expert). The reverse problem I have no idea though. Not sure what the shift coupler is like.

As Brad says, the reverse may be not be a problem (may be something minor) - the fellow who rebuilt the box should be able to help once you have a chat to him.

Howdy All

Just to clarify (as its been suggested my post above may be suggesting ill thoughts towards Keith) - I bought the gearbox knowing it was used.

I didn't get the gearbox rebuilt because it was a dud or anything for all I knew it was in great condition - I had it rebuilt because it was out of the car and a good opportunity to have it done and put it in knowing it should be in tip top condition.

So please don't think I was accusing Keith of anything.

Cheers

G'day Guys

2nd is still an unknown, buts sounds like the whine is OK

Feedback from Keith is that the gear is an aftermarket (possible FTC from Rod Penrose - 1.04:1

So we'll just see how it goes.

Still need to sort out reverse though.

Cheers

Brad
