Yeah sounds interesting, any more info for us?
Hey good luck with the new job man.
I was watching an episode of Monster Garage today. Jesse and the crew built a 51 split oval for the drag strip. You should have seen the state of this
split oval before they got stuck into it. The thing came out of a swamp!
Jesse arrived in a mint condition 66 beetle and later rocked up in a black notch he sourced from Australia. Both looked real nice from the little you
could see of them. Apparently his always really been into VW's.
Ops, sorry got side tracked talking about a differant topic in someone elses thread.
Sorry about that.

Is it an apprenticeship you are doing?
Vehicle body builder? Coach builder? Sheetmetal fabrication? Busses, Cars, Hearses, Limo's, Truck cabins? Which type, sounds like an interesting job.

From what he's said its a vehicle builder job at Qld Rail, so its just up the road from his place and should be good for him to do. From what i have
seen he's got stacks of work needed on the Super, so its a good source of VW/beer credits.
Good luck at it.

chnazzy? that's a new one for me. I'm gonna have to use that one.
That would be a good job on trains. Hard work and (hopefully) good pay. Experience and maybe use of workshop facilities.
Good on ya 1stcarbug.:thumb

Show us a picture of the left hand variety and then we'll believe it! Untill then it's just folklore!
Hope the "new apprentice" doesn't believe any of the things about the left handed variety shifters or screwdrivers in the explanation below!
Mertic shifters....yeh right! The hand of the worm doesn't "hand" the tool. However, one thing that IS made in a left hand variety is a twist
drill. Sure gets the brain active when it needs sharpening! Not in general use though.
Don't confuse the boy!

No pic required. It is left hand thread on the winder bit. That means if you have a Sidchrome or Kinchrome shifter and wind the adjuster it will go
one way.
If you hold a Bahco or Irega shifter the same way and wind the adjuster the same way as the Sidchrome, it will move the opposite direction.

Hope he enjoys the start of his career and that it helps in maintaining the beloved VW.

Back in the Dark Ages when I was the newbie in an International Harvester workshop I was sent to the parts store for a tin of red and white striped
paint. I got a big tin of white paint and a small tin of red paint. I carefully dribbled a swirl of red paint into the top of the can of white paint,
resealed it and carried it very carefully back to the workshop where I presented it to the formman. They never tried anything like that on me again

--what about left handed taps, for left hand threads--
Didn't think you had to be left handed to use these!
Left handed threads are used on one side wheel studs a number of veichles including Aston Martin (1/2" UNF LH) as well as many items of machinery
including bench/floor grinders.
As for the old Apprentice gags, new apprentices at Eveleigh Loco Works (Redfern) were sent with a wheelbarrow to pick or the "Davey Press". It
weighed around 50 tons! But that was 40 odd years ago when we had industry in Australia!
