So tell me about Caravelle's.....

I was crusing down the F3 this morning, when this Caravelle came out in front of me at Hawkesbury River, and proceeded to pull 110 - 120 kph quite easily up the hill to the Berowra exit where I turned off. It was a rectangular headlight model, GL, and full microbus setup.

So....what sort of motor do these run? Size, cooling, and what sort of mods can be done to them. I've seen that hot dual cab down south Sydney with the body kit (maroon colour) and lowering job.

Just grazing....:thumb

hmmmm.... dont think it is stock

They are a 2.1L water cooled...... dont think they are over 100HP??

Becker has one and has some ratio rockers etc but would be REAL surprised if it would pull 120 up that hill. (certainly not my air cooled!!!)

These are good for the Subie conversions - were some of the first

Thanks Barry. I suppose I should add that the exhaust looked stock - and sounded VWish. Was pretty quiet actually.

So they a 2.1 Watercooled Type 4 setup? Injected? So they could have a big bore kit dropped in them to take them to 2.5 - 2.8?

Steve Carter had a 2.1 L Wasserboxer in his yellow 1302 that was turbo charged.

Always a possibility

You never know - he did sell that set up i think

Barry,
Once you get them wound up they go well, I think my ute would hold 120 up that hill, my wifes Caravelle holds 100 no worries, and thats loaded with all of us in it, and its an auto.

Mate, it that goes for 5k I'll spew....The air is NOT cheap, and there are a few types of air fitted ... that might affect the price ... My T3 - best thing we've ever done for under 10k.

And they DONT rust ... some kind of coating they got, they are also scotchguarded inside, so stand up to hammer too....they take a while to wind up, but I've been up that hill at 110 without a hassle...but they are not rocket ships ... but they are sooooo nice to drive.

5k////stick my name on it!

Mine walks up Hawksbury at 110 without pushing.
Moonee Moonee slows it down, but Hawksbury doeesn't bother it in the least.

The cylinders could easily be bored to 96mm (or more!) and I think that there was an Ottenger(?) kit that you could order through the dealers when they were new.
But I think it added about 10gs to the price.
Kit had a longer crank (82mm?) and better valve sizes.
There was a feature on the kit in VW power magazine.
Oh, that was the '80's....damn I'm getting old!
I fitted my 90mm stoke into one of these cases, and 102mm bore, with custom cylinders.
Don't know wether the heads would support that cylinder size though.
