550 Spyder

Due to popular demand I'm starting my own thread instead of hogging Dean's

My car is a replica Porsche 550 Spyder.

It was purchased as a kit from Brazil. I am going through the tedious process of preparing for registration under the individually constructed vehicle (ICV) regulations.

The car will be test case for subsequent imports and I am working with the Brazilian factory to include the neccessary modifications for licensing in Australia.

The car is made by Chamonix in Brazil who also makes the cars marketed under the Beck name in the USA. The kits comes as a complete body and chassis assembly painted with seats, instruments, wiring harness, etc. It is imported as a "car body" which has reduced duty and avoids the need for a motor vehicle import license.

Car builders in Australia will need to fit front suspension, brakes, transaxle and engine. Each State licensing authority administers the ICV rules and an engineering signatory is required to sign off on the car to license it.

The kit is RHD and comes in the choice of paint and leather trim colours.

Kits are available to suit flat four engines VW or Subaru or late model tranverse VW/Audi engines.

Prices of the kits are expected to be between $20K and $30K landed in Australia. This will depend on the amount of modifications needed once I have been through the licensing process. This is hoped to happen within the month. Based on this the on road cost would be in the range of $30k to $40k. Most work can be performed by the average handy man except sorting the engine and emissions to meet ICV rules.

Expressions of interest are welcome for kits and as 6 cars will fit in a 40ft container this will assist to reduce the total cost.

awful car. you must be really suffering. let me take it off your hands and cheer you up a bit. :D

But seriously, very very nice. What is the exhaust you have in it? Looks like a cat converter on the pass side there. What's the setup? Coz that's a bug motor, right?

Yes - it is a cat convertor. Car must meet emission rules to pass as a new kit car. It is a 2 l Porsche 914 engine (Type 4) converted to upright with a Sharpbuilt kit and my own home made fuel injection, made to look like dual webers! It is closed loop control with an O2 sensor.

wow, that car meet all the ADRs for a new car eh? That's amazing. Good work. I was told by an engineer that aircooled motors wouldn't be able to meet emissions standards. How hard was it? Is it making much power? I guess the ECU is programmable?
