Installing rear disc brake conversion

Hi all,

I am in the process of installing the rear disc brakes (shermon conversion) however i have come across some problems and need some guidence from others.

1. Is there suppose to be place with the rear axel in the tubing?

2. Mine has axel play and I am not able to bolt up the disc assembly as there is not enough thread.........:cry

3. Do i need to move the bearing up the axel further? How much play should there be?

4. Do I need to change axels?

Cheers,

Matt.

Will post pics soon....

is the kit designed for an early "short" axle set up, or the later "long" style??

i am assuming you're fitting the kit to a swing axle, not I.R.S

heres a pic of the sort of differnce in axle length between the two

Hi dumone,

Mine are a little different to your picture. I am installing on a 1964 model bettle. However I bought the discs second hand off 063bug who had them on his 63, so they should be a good fit right?

I am thinking that I might need to tighten up the play in the axel by moving the bearing further up the axel. this will allow the disc more space on the axel itself. I am just not sure how much play there should be, if any at all?

However you could be right. Imight have the kit that is for long axel style. I will have to ask I think.

Thanks for the info though.

Cheers,

Matt.

what about trial fitting it with out the bearing, but with the bearing cover etc.

the bearings can be a tight squeeze to get em up the axle to their correct position tho.

dasdubber knows 063bug tho and in all likely hood would be able to tell you what length axles he was/is running.

realising yours would be different, i just posted the pics to give you some idea of the length differences to work with.
pictured are both for long axles, with the one on the left having been cut down for shorter ones

Yeah I might do that, I think I will work on the ride height then come back to the discs, when I get more information. I have a bearing puller so I should be able to do a trail fit.

Is there suppose to be much play? I can slide the axel in an d out about 10mm without the bearing cover installed.

I am thinking that this is too much slop.

Not sure how I am going to move the bearing up either..Hitting it up with a hammer and chesiel isn't going to work.....might have to use the lock nut at the end of the axel to slowly work it up. However I have to engine installed so the axel turns freely, even in gear!

hey man, i just measured the spline length on the shortened discs.

it is 50mm.

they have had 15mm cut off them, so for long axles, there would be a splined section above 60mm

that help?

yeah ,there will be play in the axle until you have tightened up the big nut and rotor

I just did some measuring, my axel has a spline length of 50mm and 3inch from the start of the spline to the end of the axel (they are short axel). The discs have a spline length of 60mm.

So I should assume that they where for long axel. I will prbably have to look into getting them machined down.

Thanks for the help Dunmone.

sorted.

local engineers cut mine on the lathe.

take your old drum in with you and tell em to make the splined section the same length.

realize mine are different before doimg anything, check it is possible on the ones you have first

measure twice, make once!

das or 063 will be able to confirm what was running before

Cheers,

I have installed the front one as well as the new dual brake master cylinder so I am well on the way. Just need to set the rear ride height and then fit the discs, etc. Then I can get to the electrics.

Thanks Dumone.

Matt.
