there is sumthin contradictory about that statement
" low bug with 20 inch wheels"
there was one at the nats a couple of years ago, and as low as the suspension was set, the running boards were still at standard height.
there is a happy medium between diameter and height there....
somewhere!!??

20's would make it look like a tractor.
same as people with a mirage on 20's.
no matter what you do it will still be taller than standard, unless you outlay a hell of alot of hours in cutting and welding and the dollars on top
of that.

Hi
I have seen some bugs with 20s and they suffer from the Tonka toy look. I reckon 17s with 40 series tyres look the best.

I agree with Steve, although I like JVLs (Gayanne) car. I think it has 18s or 19s on it. Give us a pic Jon....

i had 17s on mine for a while and whilst it looked shit hot and cornered like it was on rails the ride quality was crap as with such a low profile
tyres (45 series from memory) u feel every little bump in the road which probably isnt such an issue in the city but round here well need i say more
LOL
i'll try and dig up some old pics when they were on
i ended up removing them cuase the ride was just to painful and i got a fine for redrilled brakes which are apperently illeagle these days

yes in vic and maybe other states the requirement is 15mm +/- of overall diameter of the orignal tyre ie beatles had 2 tyre size choices so comply
with both.

DUB74L, what sort of tyre pressures were you running with your 17s? I ran 40 series tyres on my yellow bug and the ride was fine, even on Sydney roads
and the Pacific Hway.

i'm probably over dramatising it abit, cornering was great and on a nice smooth road it was fine but u felt every little bump in the road 10x as bad
as with standard 165 tyres
i used to run 24 in the front and 34 in the back
.......how far off am i????

Hi
A tad too much pressure, I used to run 20 in the front and 28 in the back, but my 1302 was a little heavier.

well that was when hot by the time i got to the servo
i always add about 2-3 when fully hot so i wasnt too far off
with my standard 165 tyres when cold i run 18 and 28 which seems to work well

Hi
Its all about the weight of the car affecting the side wall and making sure that the tread surface doesn’t bend inwards under braking and swerving.
Most tyres we fit to bugs are designed for much heavier cars than bugs, so you can stick to just about stock pressures. I always get 50,000 + ks from
my front tyres running 20 psi, the rears a lot less.
