Getting the clutch cable out.

I've been going by John Muir's and Gregories, and I still can't fathom it out.

What exactly is the Y-shape thing? Is that supposed to be the master break cylinder rod? ...if so, where am I supposed to undo it?

Are the pedals then supposed to all move out from the tunnel, to the right? (exposing the cable hook) ?

PS: It's for a 72 super beetle.

Jon

The brake rod is on the left hand side of the brake pedal. It goes to the master cylinder and is attached with a Cir clip from memory.

yes the pedal assembly comes out from the RHS of the tunnel. Make sure you undo the clutch arm adjusting nut on the clutch leaver on the gear box other wise the assembly wont come out unless the cable is broken

Thanks

Thanks Dave. Will make sure the cable is undone, will pull the clip off the master cylinder rod, and pull the pedal assembly out to the right. That's the go, hey? :)

Thanks.

you also have to undo the accelerator cable lever cover on the left side of the tunnel, held on by 2 17mm bolts. The lever is held on by a circlip.

remember to put a rubber band on the little hook that the clutch cable attatches to when u put in a new cable otherwise it will fall off everytime the clutch pedal falls forward.

Thats a good trick Jon the rubber band... will use that next time myself.

yeah you also have to undo the accelerator cable as well. Its a bit of a bugger getting the pedal assy back int othe tunnel but be carefull and it will go in when you least expect it.

Do you mean I don't have to bother the other half anymore?

Love the rubber band trick!! The other half will too coz it should make clutch cable replacement a 1 man job.

Good one!

Another question...

I've got the pedal assembly free, but the hook which holds the cable on is too big to fit through the tunnel hole. Nomatter what angle I try, it won't fit through.

The books make it sound so easy: "Just pull the clutch assembly forward (so the cable stays on the hook) and pull out."

Has anyone else had the same problem?

its a bit tricky to pull out (assuming u have disconnected the throttle cable and disassembled the throttle cable lever thing) it should come out when u pull it at an angle towards you, pull the clutch pedal so the hook is horizontal towards you.

lol i tried without the rubber band and it fell off the hook about 5 times, one of those times i had bolted everything up and aligned the pedals....
