Cleaning engine cases

I have been given some 36hp engine cases. They have slight oxidisation on the top from being stored for years. Whats the best way to clean them up.
Thanks Rob...

I used a Cem-tec alluminuim cleaner.. its dirty, its messy and its not good for you if you drink it :P .. but beleive me it can make a VW engine case look good.. i had a really badly oxidised case outside and full of oil inside.. the stuff made light work of the lot. i give it 14 thumbs up.

Hahahahahahahahaha nah its "drastic" but yer it is a caustic product!.
It brings the cases back to better than new.
It will remove all the brown baked on oil scum and so-on. Cheap, easy to get and does a fantastic job.

Errrrrrrr ....yeeeahhh I should have mentioned as well that this stuff (oven cleaner) is only useful on raw cast ally finish.
Anything like a mill finish or polished will be ruined......realllllly quickly!

Anthing that is caustic based will turn shiny stuff to crap.

Anyone thinking about an acid bath beware...case goes in sludge comes out.

There's a product called carbo-solve..the carbo is for carbon. It's a product used specifically for aluminium products. Probably not recommended for home use but if you can find someone who has it, it brings cases up like new.

Otherwise I've used degreaser and a water blaster...then a good clean in a kero bath to get rid of the water.

Triple K,
Basically spray it on, scrub it with a stiff bristle brush and hose it off!
Id suggest you test it out on the bottom of the sump to "get a feel" for it.
Its wise to wire brush off/degrease the oily gunge and so-on before you get into it with the oven cleaner.

It will bring the cases back to new but if you do one part, say a lot longer than the rest it tends to leave a mark.

Have fun.
