aftermarket alternators

Any feedback on these units on the type 1 mtrs?
I'm building a 12V 40bhp.
I'm guessing they wont fit the 1200 pedestal?
Will a 1600 pedestal fit the 1200 case? They both look about 75mm square so I'm guessing they will.
Wot about the height relative to the 1200 fan housing?
Thnx

Yep, need to change oil filler stand/pedestal and depnding on your circumstance, also may need to run the late 1600 tinware... that means an oil cooler change and special seals etc etc etc

Put some new brushes in your gennie and it'll be fine for another 40 years!!

The Generator /Alternator pedestals are different...
Mick Motors has them...
The alternators are usually used with doghouse oil coolers & fan shroud with wider fan etc.... but it may just bolt onto the alternator pedestal... and use the standard fan etc...
I can't remember seeing a 1200 with an alternator..
but nothing is impossible....
On a 1600 engine the fuel pump has to be replaced on some, to an offset fuel pump to stop it hitting the alternator... but I'm not sure where Your pump is located and whether it is low enough not to interfere....
I think Your 6 volt generator pedestal has a smaller curve for the 6v generator as the 12 volt generator is Much larger....
The 12v alternator pedestal looks like a 12v generator pedestal with the front section cut off....
The 12v Generator puts out 360 watts from memory...
The 12v Alternator approx 600 watts....

cheers
Lee

One other thing if You find a 2nd hand alternator...

You can some times find them at wreckers,
as 1303S Beetles with the curved windscreen have ended up at many of them....
You can pick them up cheaply at non VW wreckers, as they usually don't know how rare or costly they are...
The best ones have internal regulators....
The external regulators work , but You can have lots of alternator regulator failures....
I had the same problem with a Magna years ago...
My Son has the same problem with His Beetle regulators...

I think all new ones would have built in regulaors...
and only two [screw on] connections on the top....

Ahhh! Too much trouble! I would have liked the coupla hundred watts from an alt but I have just realised I have a 12V 36hp eng sitting in the shed- I'll borrow the gen & forget about the big lights!
