$#@%&$*!

Just when I thought all was sweet, and have sorted out the running problem by putting in another electronic ignition to replace the other that shat itself, the %*%@&^%! car will not start again.
I love my car but she is really testing my patience now. I am going to change over to club plates, as it is no longer my daily driver, any had to reconnect the horn to get the RWC. Go to start it again and all I get is a rapid fire clack noise. It had been running fine a couple of weeks ago when I put in the new ignition kit, but today, after connecting up the horn (I didn't try and start before doing so, so I am not sure if I did something while connecting the horn or not) it won't start.

Now I have 2 questions for you all:
1. why won't it start - maybe the starter motor by the sound it makes?
I don't think I had the ignition on without the car running long enough to burn the new elect.points - less than 10 seconds.
If it was the elect igintion it would still turn over, but not fire - correct?

2. Why won't the horn work. I thought I had it connected the way the wiring diagram shows, but it either sounds continuously or won't sound at all, depending on what I try with the wires. The horn button seems to work fine and its not shorting out in the column as far as I can tell.

Any suggestions before I pull all my hair out?

A rapid-fire clack noise from the starter motor usually means your battery is nearly flat. Charge it up and try again. (Is a short in your horn wiring letting your battery go flat?)

This article explains horn wiring really well:

if ya elect ign is dead you engine will just crank and crank and crank but nothing will happen. wat martin sed bout the battery. If the engine isnt kicking over i would try that first, if that doesnt work... mayb try a clutch start (if manual)...

I think you are right with the battery - it is now on charge.

The horn is still giving me grief though. I am talking about a 68 beetle, and according to the link (thanks) there should be a support bearing insulated from the shaft. However my upper mount looks completely different and the column is definately not insulated at the upper mount - just bolted straight on with no insulation.

The horn wire is connected to the horn button OK - no earthing inside the column.

Is it possible that it could be earthing at the horn - does the horn need to be mounted on a rubber mount or anything?

Any other suggestions?
