There arent as many Semi Autos out there thesedays, but that is also due to the fact that Semi Autos have ALOT of Gear box problems. More and more
people are looking out for manual beetles with a 1600 box for subaru conversions and the like...

yep...semi-auto's dont seem to be as rugged as the manual boxes.
a VW manual is bulletproof, vintage VW autos are not excellent and are expensive as hell to get rebuilt, and semi's seem to suck unless they are
mollycoddled... however one has to give VW a fair bit of credit for entering that territory way back in 1968 and making it work *reasonably* well.
Many other manufacturers did far worse.

i brought her in not so good condition but are presently spending an insane amount of money on painting then having the engine done and have all ready
got new interior. the gear box itself is in great condition and has been check out by a vw machnic. just dont really know what she will be worth when
i am done.

i have a 68 semi-auto bug and what a great car to drive, providing everthing is nicely tuned and adjusted, however, i thought they only came with a
1500 single port. not sure whether the 1600 twin port would be a good idea. any thoughts?

My wife's '71 super semi-auto came with a 1600 TP as standard fitment. A little more HP and go. The downside is the ever eclectic 34-Pict 3 :puke
and extra places for vacuum leaks to develop due to the TP's inlet system. After some post-purchase TLC it runs like a raped ape...
A few of us here (PBB, 68Autobug, Killakornkob, Pod and myself off the top of my head) run semi-auto's...myself, kkk and 68Autobug are also on http://www.vwar.org - The semi-auto/saxomat register...

Hi Nicole,
It took us about 3 months of looking before we found my Wife's '70 semi auto, so they are definetly not common.
I reckon you could easily put $5000 into it and get your money back if it's a good straight car with no rust.

the semi-auto is just as "rugged" as its manual counterparts, just not supported by mechanins, so as theyre all about 40 urs old now, they are
getting harder to find in good shape.. top car.. wonder if i'll get mine going again

Semi autos are wicked. The gearbox, well i can't make a judgement on that, but there is far more parts to get rooted. The internal clutch is a worry.
BUT they aren't as bad as a full blown classic dub auto. The only down side to performance is that it is exactly like a manual box, (in gearing),
cept it don't have the 1st gear. so low down balls are a little small :P As i have heard.
But... They make hell wicked donor cars!!! IRS Rear, Balljoint front end, and DISC brake front! The amount u pay to convert a standard pan to have all
this is far greater + not as strong as original. However, i would manual convert if I had the opportunity (cause I got a baja and need a little more
torque).
anyone wanna swap boxes? And shifter rod/pedals?
HEY! No one has called them a stickshift auto yet? haha

Hi,
Porsche actually invented them and called them the "SPORTOMATIC" in the early 911s....
I have been told they had a lot of early problems with the gearbox in the US,
as they were telling everyone [when they were sold....] to leave it in top gear...
all the time...
So, Now I've been told to use the 3 gears when driving it...
and You won't have problems...
Most Stickshifts [as they were officially called in the USA]
were sold in the USA... and there are still heaps of them about...
Most of the late model Karmann Ghia cabriolets bought into Australia from USA are StickShifts.....
although they are called Auto Sticks in the USA... by most VW people....
Many VWs still having the 'StickShift' badge on the rear...
Damien has an "StickShift" badge on His deck lid....
The StickShift was sold from 1968 - 1976....
with the single port 1500 engine and 1600 twin port engine in Australia...
In Europe it also came with the 1200cc & 1300 engines...
even in a 1303S body...
in countries where fuel is very expensive,,,,
If Fuel keeps going up here, We May all end up driving 1300s....:P:P:P

Hi Nicole,
the sky's the limit....
no good having a half finished beetle....
You need to replace all the running gear as its all over 30 years old...
You need new brakes hoses , cylinders etc...
New ball joints, tie rod ends....
CV Joints and boots...
then there is the inside....
then it will look good and drive like a new car...
I have taken nearly 10 years to do mine....
so... I didn't spend it in one huge outlay...

Yes,
they are pretty rare Chris....
although many chassis were used on early bodies...
as they had the IRS of the Superbeetles....
instead of swing axles....
Ball joint front end with disc brakes....
[No Beetles ever came with Disc Brakes in the USA]
{but they all had IRS from 1969} really strange.... IMHO..
