auto transmission cooling

just wondering if there is problems with automatic transmissions getting to hot over long distances and heavy loads. if so would it pay to have an aftermarket cooler attached to keep it cooler. oh yeah my kombi is an '74 1800cc which should weigh round the 2t mark when fully loaded.:beer

hi,
this has been discussed many times, the outcome that- no you can't fit a cooler, overheating does not seem to be an issue if the box is in good condition, best checked by the colour of the fluid - if it is a brownish colour it has probably been cooked

It takes 3 litres of ATF to do an auto gearbox fluid change. However the total capacity is 6 litres, as you can't drain ALL the fluid out.

If your old fluid is burnt, you might have do a change, take a short drive and then change it again to flush out all the old stuff.

With nice new fluid, topped up correctly, your stock auto box should be fine. Cruise at 90-100 km/h and all will be well.
