Importing engines=Hard?

In the search of bolt in do nothing HP I have been looking O/S.

Does the HP rating sound reasopnable for something with a pict 34?
What sort of import duties would I be expected to pay?
Can anyone recommend a engine builder/seller in Victoria?

A friend of mine just got the bill for importing a motor from the US and even though he got a quote the price that they tried to get out of him is about 3 times what they quoted him. Of course they are arguing their case so at the moment I think its still in dispute. Think the company was something like Bax Global?

So yeah be careful, I'm sure they are reputable people out there but how do you know? See if the seller has any normal freight methods they use, which they might if the seller is a reasonable size company.

I met with Steve from Serrano's in CA about two months ago - he has shipped engines OS in the past, and seems like a good operator. Have a look on thesamba for his contact details and examples of the engines he has available. He will quote a freight price, and then I think you'd be up for GST plus any customs charges which I don't think would be too significant - ring Customs to find out what you'd be up for.

Ok, Got it clarified.
I will generally only have to pay 3% duty on a second hand engine. If on the import papers if it is identfied as a vintage replacement engine I will have to pay no duty at all!

Yep, I am with Barls.

It is just like buying car audio gear cheap off ebay - good price but no technical support or warranty coverage. Buyer beware, just another thing to think about. :tu:
