63 bug progress

It began like this:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2128/2315914959_4a0e7cb6c0_b.jpg

I purchased the above vehicle and a 57 oval for $600 (mostly complete 36hp engine included, and a 1600dp seized missing head and other bits, sitting out in the weather)

My uncle-in-law grew up working on these machines, and so I enlisted his help with the engines. You can learn about that journey here.
We (my wife and I), began to strip the 63. The door's were a complete and utter mother to get off. (I used an oxy to heat it red hot, then smash it with the impact driver)

Replaced front link pins, bushes. Regreased bearings and installed new slave cylinders.

Took the body off, braced the door and prepared for a heater channel replacement.

Got some new bits from mick-motors in brisbane and bought a series of videos from bug me video. These taught me how to do a heater channel replacement and other stuff.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2134/2316679035_274a6403c2_o.jpg
Removed the old heater channel.

Welded the new one in.

Sister in law fixed up the seats for me.

That is the end of the photo's. Since then, I have stripped the paint off and will resume the photo's again shortly.

Well, I got it and a 57oval for $650

I haven't started on the oval yet, but its in better condition than the 63 (ie heater channels are good)

Anyways I welded in the new heater channel yesterday and will put some pics up later.

Thanks bails. I need all the luck I can get. Although I have a bit of help. My uncle was a vw mechanic and he has rebuilt two motors for me. I'm going to go and pick up the engines next weekend and watch 'em run for the first time :)

Will let you know when I have updated the site.

Good work doc. I have done a couple of heater channel in Beetles in the past and its a big job. Its a real satisfying moment when all the
new metal is welded in.
