Is there a letter anywhere in the code?... this might help...

D Thru 8/65, 1200cc (34 hp),
O 1964, 1500cc (44 hp)
H 1965, 1500cc (44 hp)
HO and TO 1966-67, 1500cc (44 hp)
B5 1968, 1600cc single port, single relief
B 1969, 1600cc single port
B6 1970, 1600cc single port, dual relief, for Type 1 vehicles
AE 1971-72, 1600cc dual port, 8/70-7/71
AH 1973-1974, 1600cc dual port, for Type 1 vehicles
AJ, AS 1975-79 1600cc dual port, for Type 1 vehicles
F1, F2 1300-1600cc replacement engine case
AK 1967-74 1500-1600 replacement engine case
AB, AD, AM 1600cc replacement engine case

Your engine certainly looks rather like a 1200.... judging by the fan shroud and the 6V generator. This would make perfect sense, as the 1200 was installed in Kombi's and Beetles from about 1951? until about 1962. Your '58 would have had a 1200 from the factory. :)

Cheers

Ah OK, that is odd... :spin:

On my Kombi, the letter code is CJ and is at the beginning of the engine number ie. CJ 014307

Your's should be similar... I think it might have the number stamped on the bottom of the crankcase too perhaps... if i recall correctly, mine has something stamped above the sum on the right hand side.

does the genny pedestal bolt on or is it cast into the case?... if it is cast into the case, then it can only be a 36HP 1200.... which is the same as what it came with. if it has a bolted on pedestal, then being 6V, it is more than likely a 40HP 1200, or a very slim chance that it is an early 60's 1500 (only used in type 3's and Kombi's and not to be confused with the later 1500's used from 1966-1969).

The number on the pedestal is not the engine no.

You need to look on the engine case itself, just under where the pedestal mounts. It is on the rear (rear is rear of car) of the motor just to the right of the case parting line.

If I remember correctly, the number on the pedestal is raised ie it is cast in, while the engine no is stamped onto the block.

thatd be one of the last 40hps

probably a 64-65 model
the early ones didnt have letter prefixes
till they brought out the 1300 in 65-66 from memory

It should be right here where the red arrow is... the one in my photo has an H at the beginning, followed by a number...meaning it is a 1965 1500cc. :)

Not sure exactly where your letter is, best I can think of is that its a 36HP or earlier... not sure of the significance of the WC... :(

can you take a picture of the inlet manifold?

the other thing ive noticed is that 40hp 1200s had that
"Caution use only genuine VW parts" sticker above the fan
where as 1300s have it inside the glovebox lid

Makes a lot of difference when you dont have much weight to push and the numbers you are dealing with are that small... 40hp is something like a 14% increase in horsepower over a 36hp.

Wit regards to those letters, I think I do acually recall reading summin about them somewhere a while ago... cant remember what it was tho now. :(
